stupid question. i have a mexican strat and recently installed a seymor duncan shr-1b pickup in the bridge position. (amazingly it worked) i love the sound because it's hotter than the original but still has a strat sound. i always play on my bridge pickup and my tone knobs do not affect the sound on the bridge pickup. i was wondering how i could go about wiring just the one pickup with only a volume knob. this has always been the format for my dream guitar. simple design for a simple dude. kind of like my playing. thanx for any help you might have and i apologize if this has already been discussed. thanx again.

I can draw you up a diagram, but how many lead wires are coming of the duncan?

thank you very much. there are 5 wires on my pickup. black, white, green, red and bare. i have found a diagram but it's drawn for someone who knows what they are doing. i'm new at this and stupid. it's folks like you that don't mind helping out a newcomer that makes me dig in and learn some simple mods. my guitar is still buzzing like crazy and i figured while i was in there again, i might as well wire it to my simple preference. does that make sense? i know it needs some sheilding. thanx for your time.

Welcome.

Solder the red and white wires together and insulate them.

As you are looking at the volume pot with the shaft facing downward and the three terminals facing you, unsolder everything from the left terminal of the volume pot and then solder ONLY the black wire from the pickup to it. Your middle terminal should have a hot wire (usually white) straight to the output jack and nothing else. Your right terminal along with the green and bare wires from the pickup should be soldered to the can (back) of the volume pot along with the ground (black) wires from the output jack and the tremolo claw. You can leave the tone pots and selector switch still in the pickguard to plug holes. Yes, you can leave the ground wire from the upper tone pot still connected to the back of the volume pot as it won't affect form, fit or function.

first and foremost, thank you. your guitar is exactly what i want mine to look like. i've already found a site to order the pickgaurd for that clean look. your explanation is exactly what i found on the net but easier to understand. i really want to clean up the innards and get this baby to quit buzzing so much. now, i just need a weekend off! can't wait to put this advice to good use. again, nice axe. thanx!

The Tom Delonge model has the single pickup/volume knob arrangement.
This short-lived signature model came with a Seymour Duncan Invader humbucker, a pearloid pickguard and a CBS large headstock.

There was also a cheaper Squier version of the guitar, featuring a Seymour Duncan Detonator humbucking pickup rather than the Invader found on the Mexican Fender originals. The Squier Delonge also uses a 1-ply white pickguard.

Looks like very much to Tom's single humbucker Strat, except for the maple neck, slick black finish, small headstock, black plastic Stratocaster knob and vintage-style tremolo bridge.

The Atomic is very crappy-sounding to my ears.

In your place, I would swap the Atomic for a Seymour Duncan Invader.
