Hello. Just curious if any of our afficianatos can tell my about strat pickguards. Questions: why plies instead of a single piece of equal thickness, why the hole amounts, and lastly what diffent materials have been used and why? Thanks.

Not sure about the diff. plys, as far as 8 or 11 hole 8 hole were vintage than switched to 11 hole to stop warping of the vintage 8 hole single plys.
I think as far as the 3 ply was also due to the warping issue(3 ply are thicker), but thats just my understanding of it.

The plys just add lines of color to the pickguard. You can visiable see the plys on the edges of the pickguard, its just a feature thing. The original hole amounts were only eight. But the single plys tended to warp causing three more screws to keep it down. Then multiple plys were added to thicken up the sturdiness of the pickguard. Now its either a retro-vibe look with single ply eight screws, or a more modern look of three ply, 11 screws.
