Hey All,

I play live every week in a praise and worship band and have practice once a week. I also play at the house quite a bit. I play an Am Stnd w/ Hot Noiseless, and I also have a HWY 1 Tele. Love them both!! I also just got the new Digidesign Eleven Rack....so I'm playing a lot (love it)!!!!

Anyway, Ive been using Elixcir coated strings. I know strings are a personal perference, but does anybody else use them? What do you think?

Are there better strings out there for a guy who plays a lot and doesn't want to change strings every week?

I found elixirs to be good for metal and thats about it.
They sounded great when they first went on. That lasted a few days, they rapidly lost their edge and took on a rounded soft sound. They kept that for 18months in the case of the last time I used em.

Better off to just wipe your strings when your done playing. After all the coating on these strings is only there to stop grime corroding the string. Easy answer for improved longevity is to clean your strings better.

Yeah my dad bought them for me and I immediately did not like the sound. I'm kinda crazy about cleaning my hands/strings.. I wash before I play and wipe the strings thoroughly when done. My strings last about 1.5 to 2 weeks before I can't stand the tone/grime.

The elixirs did last longer than my standard ernie ball strings... but the tone doesn't sit well with what I want. The metal comment would make sense though... they would seem suitable for that.

I tried Elixers when I bought my first Taylor acoustic as they come with Elixers installed. I've been using them on my acoustics ever since as they sound almost as good as a great string like a Martin SP. OK, not quite that good but they sound great until they day you break one so in the long run you sound better for a lot longer. A real value in that regard.

On the other hand my love of acoustic Elixers lead me to try their electric counterparts and those are not nearly as compelling. Not even close. Quite disappointing, actually. I find no improvement in the tone or longevity over a standard nickel wound set. Just more money is all. Won't be trying coated electric strings again.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I haven't tried them and I don't think I will be,I intend to continue the tried and true method of wiping the strings after use.By keeping a clean cloth handy and wiping the strings after use they'll keep fresh a lot longer anyway.

Hello!

I use Nexus Polymer Coated strings by Rotosound on one of my guitars. I use them to solve one particular issue, the subtle difference between the unwound and wound strings (there is a good youtube review that details this) when using my set of Lace Sensors (Blue, silver, red).

I like them! They have lasted way longer than any other set of strings I've ever bought and they feel great. They also minimize the sound of your fingers sliding form note to note (similar to flatwound strings) which is a bouns. I use them on a maple board so the wound strings that have a black coating show up. With a rosewood or ebony board it may be difficult to see on a poorly lit stage. At £11 a set however, they are not cheap.

They serve a purpose and i'm happy with the way they preform but, I wouldn't use them on any of my other guitars. A'ddario 10's are where it at for me.

The above is just my experience, yours and others may differ. Hope this helps

Andy

I've been using the Dean Markley's. Also another "coated" string, but they sound and feel great. Much cheaper then Elixcir and Cleartone....

Except that I will add that I don't like the feel of coated strings.

Wiping strings is a good idea--it also depends on your skin type and how oily it is.
My skin tends to be dry, so my strings don't die as quickly.

I also just got one of these-
http://www.thestringcleaner.com/

And while I questioned why I was spending that much on something a rag could do, it's so much easier--and kind of fun--and it gets the whole sting.

So check one out--I like them.

the ernie ball coated strings have a really sticky feel to em (esp the unwound strings). i'm so tempted to whip em off even tho they are nowhere near dead.

the acoustic elixirs sound pretty good, and feel nice and smooth.

Well with the amount of gain and distortion in metal tone is not at the forefront. I never tried them but anything coated is going to affect the natural tone of a string. I think you were given the right advice and just make sure you wipe down your strings everytime you play. The key is everytime because the one time you dont that is all it takes for the sweat and grime to kill them.
