I've played both .11's and .12's on my Strats for the past year with no problems. I took both to my tech for a proper set up though.

You may see more fret wear over time with thicker strings. My frets are getting worn down after a year of daily use, so it's time for me to take it to the shop for some fret work.

You will be fine as long as you do the setup as everyone said, but treat your self and get 11's as flatwounds. You will like.

The trem was like that because you have to do a complete setup.

Adding a spring or two and tightening the trem claw could have fixed that problem.

By doing just those 2 things you are actually adding to the problem.
Heavier gauge strings will add tension to the neck changing the relief. In changing the neck in this manor it also changes the string height (action) which in turn changes the intonation.

A COMPLETE SETUP is needed.

Here is a great book for anyone to get-Guitar Player Repair Guide by Dan Erlwine. It will show you how to do a ton of things on your guitar and even come with a CD.

Yeah, I know. I didn't mean to just add a spring or tighten the trem claw, I meant that was the specific reason why the trem popped out. I should have made that more clear in the original post, sorry. :)
