Two things I think I see happening on this thread, and has been clarified a few times, is: 1) Offshore licensed manufacturing, such a Fender Squire series made in China or Korea or Japan. This is legitimately done with Fender, Gibson and other companies are doing it as well. 2) The illegal counterfeit production of guitars, that are made for the very purpose of deceiving the consumer. By much of the outward appearance they look like a USA model (may even say Made in USA on the headstock) and are trying to be passed off as American Strats, or a Gibson Les Paul. This is illegal black market manufacturing and trade.

The reason we have patents is to protect the investment and sole invention of an item. Think about how ripped off you would feel to buy a Gibson Les Paul with a flame top that says Made in USA for $1200 to find out it is a Chinese fake....... It is just wrong. Some innocent people who just do not know what to look for in a counterfeit, who save up their money, often get swindled by these folks.

Yeah, That link shows made in the USA on the headstock, But the tuners look wrong, the nut is wrong, the bridge isn't a two point. its six screws, and that was all at a glance,i can't imagine what it would sound like plugged in. Well if someoni is going to but a guitar off the internet, and an american strat to boot, they ought to find out where its coming from. I never buy a guitar without being able to play it first, and if I picked that thing up and tried it, I'm shure I wouldn't be taking it home with me.BUYER BEWARE!! 8)

Yeah, Chinese rip-offs are just that, rip-offs. Not all guitars made in China suck though, I played a Guild GAD acoustic the other day (Bookmatched Sitka spruce, AAAA flame maple back and sides, ebony fretboard, MOP inlays, made in China)and I thought it was one of the best guitars I've ever played.

+1 for the Chinese Guilds, also Blueridge guitars are made in China and they are top notch so far as quality and the tone they put out.

I have one of those mid 80's MIJ Squier Strats and the workmanship on that instrument is top notch! It's as good, if not better than most American Strats I've played over the years...the folks at the FujiGen plant really got it right back in the 80's. In other words, if you refuse to buy something like a guitar based on your perception of where it was made, you're only cheating yourself.

The MIJ Squires are an exceptional case compared with Squires made else where because they where of the same quality as a MIJ Fender only difference is the sticker, they where made at the same plant for anything to have the fender logo it must reach a minimum standard.

The same goes for the MIM Fenders they need to reach a minimum standard. MIM are of good standard. I prefer a MIM Deluxe over a American Special because i didn't like the feel of the neck on the special. I also liked USA Standard it was a little bit more (if you add the price of a case to the MIM) by about $250 AUD i prefer USA made as it has a reputation to keep. and i really liked the sound of it + the rounded frets, colour was a minor influence as i really liked Senia Sunburst and chrome hardware.

The MIM's and MIC's would be more expensive without the MIA's because they are no longer competing with them.

MIC Gretsch's really destroyed Gretsch's reputation (for there current instruments) when they stopped making them in the US. I'm unsure of late whether that has changed or weather i'm completely correct.

Personally, I try not to buy ANYTHING made in China as I have been there a couple times and have visited their "sweat shops"—one of which was a china manufacturer. They had rooms full of 10 to 15 year old kids with air brushes in their hands, each spraying one color of one part of a piece of china. No ventilation, no masks, and a cloud of fumes hovering overhead.

Not to mention they are Communist and are building a huge military machine from our Wallmart and other Chinese outlet stores dollars. I try to buy USA made and Japanese made everything. It is very hard.

So Chinese guitars? I have seen about 5 now. Look nice but crooked nuts, bad fret leveling, etc. I took one guys "Gibson" Les paul and worked it over for about a day, and when I was done (Oh the wiring! Eh Gads!) it was almost as nice as some USA Les Pauls. Details details details......The fine tuning made it very playable. BUT when it was all said and done IT WAS A CHINESE COPY!!!

yeah totally agreed.

china is a complete disgrace to human kind.

disgusting human rights record.

yes there army is very very scary. all the john waynes in america couldnt stop them.....

even if they shout yeeehaaa really loud...

george bush jnr. made them favored nation to usa. like two peas in a pod....

I already posted this! My wife says I have a habit of repeating things to make a point. One of my traits of character! 8) LOL! I think this hits the issue on the head. No one is saying that the Chinese can't make a good guitar, if they really try. What we have been sharing is the issue with counterfeits being passed off as the real deal!
