My suggestion to pull out the spring is using a crochet needle. They come in different sizes and have a hook on one end - perfect for pulling an uncooperative spring.

Thanks for the suggestion. Will give that a try too.

Well I'm happy to report all is well in the land of the Tremolo. The crochet needle did the trick! Took about 10 seconds to get them out. Here's a pic of the offending springs and the tool that saved the day. Thank you to everybody who contributed.

Nice! I bet it was that little loop at the top of the spring that got it stuck in the first place, that and it being the wrong part of course. Good job, and thanks for the pic.

Glad that worked. I was getting ready to tell you to bring that guitar over to me and let me have a shot at getting it out for you.

That is a very nice looking Strat!!!!

The spring provides tension on the bar. I tighten mine so that with the spring compressed as far as it will go the bar is just past the last tone knob. That means the bar is completely out of the way. Then as I bring the bar closer for use it remains stiff and stays put in any postilion.

You know that little spring that goes into the block before putting in the trem bar? I lost mine. I bought a few springs from the hardware store (none of my local guitar shops had them in stock) and now I have not one, but two springs stuck in the bottom! The sad part is they are not functioning like they should be. Trem arm goes from wobble wobble to tight in an instant.

I've tried fishing it out with a fish hook, small screw drivers and a drill bit to no avail. Any suggestions? I'm having better luck pulling out my hair than getting out these springs!

I had the same issue. I gave up eventually and locked the tremolo arm down.

Just ran into this issue with my '13 AmStd Strat, and here's what worked and what didn't for me to get the spring out of the trem block.

I first tried a wood screw, #6 x 2-1/2". Either it was too thick, or I was doing something wrong - either way, wasn't able to get the spring out.

Tried my wife's thinnest crocheting needle, 0.6 mm. The needle head was too thick to go inside the spring to get it hooked. Bent and scratched the needle trying. The spring still there.

What did the trick was a flat (slotted) screwdriver. Wiha 260 / 1.5 x 40 mm. It's so thin, I was able to stick it inside the spring, where it got stuck. The stuckness of the screwdriver was stronger than the stuckness of the spring, and I pulled them both out easily. I was super-worried about damaging the screwdriver, as I was actually trying to unlodge the spring by poking and propping it on the sides. Getting the screwdriver stuck inside the spring was a lucky accident. I guess the high quality German-made steel paid for itself - unlike the crocheting needle, it came out unscathed, despite the abuse.

Thoughts:

1) If the spring was wound in a different direction, it might have been possible to actually drive a screw into it, like into the treading of a nut, and pool the bugger out. Still, would probably need a thinner screw, like #5 or 4 or even 3. The problem is, the thinner you go, the shorter is longest screw available.

2) The spring came out deformed and compressed, and won't extend to its original length. Does this mean I had tightened the trem bar too much, trying to get rid of the wobble?

Yes, I learned the hard way too.
