While I'm deciding on whether I'd purchase the MIJ Strat I happened to browse on Ebay and just found this beauty:

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/92-FENDER-Strato ... 2eabb0ee2d

Since you have all been very helpful with my original topics, would appreciate your opinions on this guitar? Is it worth considering over the '86 MIJ Strat?

Just grabbed more info of the sales guy about the MIJ Strat.

He claims it is a '62 reissue Stratocaster from 1986. I passed on the info that CA had told me about it not being a reissue and rather a Standard 1988 Strat...He replied as far as he knows it is a '62 reissue.

Anyways, it is Made in Japan. Original Classic Black Finish w/ white single Ply pickguard. Rosewood Fretboard with Original Pickups & electronics. 60s Reissue style Tremolo Bridge w/ tremolo bar. Gotoh tuners. nut is 1-5/8" wide. 21 frets.

Personally I would pass on the eBay Strat.

In my personal opinion that is NOT a '62 RI.

The only way that's a 62 reisssue, is if the guy changed everything on it except maybe the body and the electronics. And then what would be the point of buying it as a 62 reissue. But I'm guessing the guy selling it just doesn't know the difference.

There's always MIJ 62 reissues on ebay, I would hold out for another.

Thank you to all for the replies and opinions. Have decided to pass on the MIJ guitar since the saleman refuses to acknowledge its NOT a 62 reissue and also the price is a bit too much. Also have passed on the Ebay Strat. Will continue my search...

BTW, was thinking is it possible to buy a Strat body and then separately purchase a different neck and have it put together, like say a 62 neck and a 2002 body (I'm just throwing examples here), is that a good way to do it or should I stick to buying a Strat thats all of the same year/type/vintage?

A Lot of people build Partsocasters to terrific results, but be warned there are a lot swindlers out there who will sell complete junk to you, and sometimes you have no way of knowing until you assemble the whole guitar. That said my #1 guitar is a partsocaster. CS 65 neck and pickups + AVRI '62 body, bridge and neckplate + American standard Mint PG

At that time the MIJ Standards were put together with what ever parts were in the bins on that day. That pickguard could have been what was in the bin that day.

CAFeathers, could you help me out. I have dug into the history of the MIJ/CIJ guitars quite a bit, even talking to a retired Fender Rep who was part of the whole Fender Japan era and had been to the Fugi plant on the island of Matsumoto in Japan. What i am wondering is, how do you know this about using "what ever parts were in the bins on that day" in the building some MIJ guitars? I saw you posted that on several other threads too. Could you expain how you know that? Thanks!

Read this: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/john.black ... andard.htm
Basically what he is saying is they used whatever parts were available.
