I have a 99-00 american standard strat. I noticed now they call them american series. Are there significant differences in quality, sound, appearence?

Can anyone tell me what the difference between the two are and which is better/prefered by most?

The American Standard is said to be the guitar that saved Fender from ruin. When Fender's management bought the company from CBS their first priority was to build a high quality guitar as they had in the pre-CBS days and restore the company's reputation. The result was the American Standard Stratocaster.

Just a few years ago, it was replaced with the American Series. It has "refinements in playability" like rolled edges on the fingerboard and more attention to the nut and frets which, in my mind, are more quality-related changes rather than new features. The new Strat has the Delta Tone system which may be the only significant change. In my opinion, the changes weren't Earth shattering enough to change the name (with the possible exception of the DT system). Certainly the playability refinements are welcome, but while the Delta Tone is different, I don't know that it's better.

As has been said elsewhere, a guitar is a personal thing. You have to play them, compare them, and choose the one that's right for you.

I have a 1997 American Standard Strat, and it too has (had - I replace the pickups) the Delta Tone system in it. I am in the market for another American Strat, and having just looked at them this past weekend, the most noticeable difference I saw/felt was in the neck shape. My old '97 has a thinner profile neck than the current American Series. It's not much of a difference, and the American Series strat neck's are comfortable and not "chunky."

Another difference I too noticed was refinements in appearance. The American Series has small cosmetic details that really make them look great. I love my '97 Am Std., though.

I didn't know the Delta Tone circuit was in older Strats. OK, so there are even fewer differences between the two.
