That would be an honor and a pleasure - thank you kindly! :D

Well, I'll run with that (you knew I would! ).

I spend half my time in the south west of my country at a rural location on the edge of Dartmoor (of Sherlock Holmes / Hound of the Baskervilles fame). Sometimes I like to stroll up to this spot to watch the sunset, perhaps with something moody on the iPod:

Turning in the other direction the moors stretch away into the distance:

Not the Himalayas or Appalachians or any such. But fairly pretty of a warm summer's evening.

I'm down there this weekend as it happens. I'll see if I can get a nice pic or two...

A bit more progress. I hope this is not too boring for everyone. I brushed on a coat of sanding sealer last night. Here are a couple of pics from today after it dried before I sanded it.

Here are a few pics from after sanding with 220 grit. For the experts, please let me know if you see any glaring errors. It is starting to feel very smooth to me. I think one more coat will do it. Then I'm going to put a base coat of white lacquer.

I'm applying the 2nd coat of sanding sealer on tonight. Here it is wet, I'll let it dry for a few hours and put a coat on the back. I'm going to sand it back with 320 tomorrow.

thirsty work ...

From what I can see you are doing outstanding work on this body! I can't wait to see how it turns out. An inspiration indeed. Good luck on the rest of the job.

Hi Kong!

Looking good! The wet shot looks great. Thirsty work indeed! Tis a shame we can't get Yuengling in the UK. I'll have to neck a couple of bottles of Harveys instead!

Cheers!

Andy

Yes - now this is very odd. Partly inspired by russianracehorse's famous thread (In Praise of Great Beer) I have succeeded in tracking down many American beers over here with highly pleasing results ( ). Just for example, here are some nice folks in Norfolk who's services I have used many times. Their page of American beers lists no less than 60 different ones:

Beers of Europe - American beer listings

Many we know of, many we don't. And yet neither there nor anywhere else I've located after extensive researches have I been able to find a bottle of this Yuengling we've been told of so many times on this Forum. It really doesn't seem to be available anywhere our side of the Atlantic.

How frustrating!

Oh well. I'll have to drown my sorrow. Now let me see...

[Sound FX: crack (bottle opening); glug-glug-glug; slurp-slurp; swallow; burp] Aaaahhhh! :D

Cheers - C

Okay 2 coats of sanding sealer last night. Sanded back this evening with 220 and then 320 sandpaper. Guitar feels very smooth and I can't feel the repairs when I run my hand over. I think I'm ready for the white undercoat.

A last couple of pics and a question or two. What should I wipe the guitar down with before the white coat? I'm thinking mineral spirits, but I'm asking just to make sure.

Also, is this lacquer okay to use for the white undercoat, or should I get something else? Is it okay that it is gloss? After the white, I'm spraying sherwood green metallic if that makes any difference.

Okay time for another Yuengling ...

HOT DAMN this is looking good! sherwood green here we come :)

I'm pleased to see you drinking a proper larger, great colour from the look of that glass. Ceri you complain about getting a decent American beer in England, it's nearly as hard to get a decent American Beer in America!

(This coming from an australian whos spent a total of 6 weeks in America, so the tongue is planted firmly in the cheek when I say that :p).

Not having ever finished a build in anything other than clear coats, I have no idea what so ever on how to prime the body for painting. Handballing it over to someone else to answer :)

Well I'm with Impulse7 on this as my feeble attempt at spraying did not go very well at all, so I'll keep my gob shut!

That's a great shot of the Yuengling! Looks like a tasty beverage indeed!

I'll have to check that list and see what my man in town can source for me :D

Cheers!

 Hi Impulse: naughty!

But no - I can get very good American ales in Britain. Of course, the supermarkets sell the crappy light watery brands with well known names we don't need to mention. No need to bother with that stuff. But a glance at that supplier I linked to shows all kinds of interesting things - the Arrogant Bastard Ale that Mr Troublecall kindly recommended to me for example. I've had lots of good use out of that one!

There is a Real Ale shop ( www.realale.com ) near me that stocks many American beers along with tons of other stuff from around the world. It's just that on this Forum I've often heard people talk about Yuengling (the oldest brewery in America) and that is the one I can't seem to get... :?

Hi John: I had a very nice evening in the Birdland club in NY one time in the early '90s drinking Samuel Adams. I liked it a lot! I liked the little jazz trio that was playing too, but I can't remember who they were. That shows how much I liked the ale! :D

To Andy: still, we have plenty of decent bevvies of our own, don't we? I'm down in the South-West right this minute: here's a few from the local area:

Nice. Is it too early...?

Do you spot the bottle of Old Moggie in that last photo? That belongs over on your thread, Andy!

Oh, and to Kong: good work, man! Regarding the white paint, I have no idea what's in that "lacquer" and it could be anything so I can't comment on compatibility issues. But as far as the gloss aspect is concerned, if you just give it a sand over with P200 or 300 after it has dried you will take the gloss off and create a "tooth" for the top coats to adhere to. Just do that and you'll be fine.

Carry on, mate. Good work - and a great thread! :D

Cheers - C

Great work and great lagers!

On the issue of the white gloss undercoat, also a bit concerned about exactly what's in that gloss paint -- will is cause peeling or bubbling later?...

If it were me, I'd just go with a simple white primer.

Good Luck!

I'm not about to muck this job up with mystery white lacquer. I had seen this brand used on a refinish job on another forum but it was for the clear coat. Here is a list of ingredients from the MSDS.

DIMETHYL KETONEEXEMPT
SOLVENT
PROPANE
BUTANE
ETHYL ACETATE
ISOBUTYL ACETATE
METHYL ETHYL KETONE
ETHYL 3-
ETHOXYPROPIONATE
PROPRIETARY RESIN 1
TITANIUM DIOXIDE
XYLENE
ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL
PROPRIETARY INERT
ETHYLBENZENE

I'll probably just order the white primer from re-ranch when I get the sherwood green.

This is a good plan. Bill's products are top notch. And they are all formulated to work together. I would suggest you also buy your clear coat from him too.
I wouldn't have bought a compressor and auto guns, if we could still ship his stuff easily across the border.
