Okay a quick question. I was thinking about using this for a grain filler.

http://www.newparks.com/PDF/TDB/TDB-WoodFiller.pdf

It is called Parks Red Oak Wood Filler and I got some for $10 / qt. I tested it on a piece of poplar and it seemed to do a pretty good job. Then I did a coat of sanding sealer over it and it came out very smooth. I'll post a pic of the test piece tomorrow.

I have used this:

There is a difference between 'Wood Filler' and Grain Filler.
Sometimes grain filler is confusingly named. bartleys'(above) is called Paste Wood Filler, but I have seen others called Grain Filler, or Grain/pore Filler.

I haven't used the filler you linked, hopefully it works for ya.

It actually looks well suited for your needs.

Update:

The piece of poplar that I tested the wood filler as grain filler came out quite nice. I applied the grain filler using a plastic putty knife. I also put a piece of blue painter's masking tape over the edge of the putty knife. I applied the filler across the grain making sure to push the filler down into the wood. After I sanded the grain filler back, I applied my sanding sealer which is Deft and is brushed on. It came out really smooth in very much less than ideal conditions. Here is a pic.

Image

After seeing the result, I decided to used the grain filler on the guitar with the same process of applying across the grain and making sure to push it down into the grain of the wood. I was a bit sloppy with this part because I was pretty sure it would sand back pretty easily. Here is a series of pics of the process. First after it was applied and dried and then after I did some sanding with 220. I think the body is just about ready for a coat or two of sanding sealer. I'm very confident that it will be extremely smooth to the eye and to the touch after I apply the sanding sealer and sand it back. My confidence is growing with each step of the process and I'm feeling good that the finish is going to come off quite well.

Alright Kong!!

Looking good. We're all pulling for you. All the hard work at this prep stage will pay off, you'll be glad you did it the right way.

+1. From your very nice clear photo that seems to have worked really well on that tricky spot around the cavity fill behind the trem slot. Good job! 8)

That's looking great Kong! Good choice on the pickguard, if my eyes aren't deceiving me. I like the mint green

And a question to Ceri. I'm sorta new here, and from reading posts I've inquired that you did a guitar project of your own. If so, could I have a link to it? Thanks.

Kong,
So you're at it again? That's great. Any idea as to the name of the Floodcaster's new sibling? Will you be using copper tape in the cavity?
Finally, thanks for another fine build.

Cheers,
John.E

Sure man: there were two I did that were about putting wrecked guitars back together. This was a couple of years ago:

http://www.fender.com/community/forums/ ... hp?t=17948

And this turned out to be "the big one", earlier this year:

http://www.fender.com/community/forums/ ... hp?t=30747

Serious warning: those threads contain a helluvalot of pages!

Apologies to Kong for this short diversion. Back to the business of this thread...

Cheers - C

Please keep the diversions coming! I haven't even put up a decent photo of a beer, a cocktail, or a pet yet. On the plus side, we haven't had a geopolitical or religious argument break out just yet.

Ceri - Maybe I'll have some volcano pics in a few weeks. The fiance is attending grad school for earth sciences and one of her last tasks is a field course to study the volcanoes of the Cascade Range in July. Hopefully she'll come back with some nice photos of Mt. St. Helens. I'm glad it is nearly over. She took me on a hike yesterday that was 3 miles with 1500 feet of elevation. To train I ate mass quantities of Filet Mignon on Saturday. Did I mention my crippling fear of heights or my being terribly out of shape. Well actually I am a shape ... round. Here was the view - the Delaware Water Gap, New Jersey's answer to the Himalayas!

Image

We ended up on that rocky outcrop on the upper left side of this photo.

Thanks to everyone for all of the kind encouragement so far. I'll get the sanding sealer on this week and maybe the base coat of white lacquer. I better order the Sherwood Green paint, it's almost time.

I had not planned copper tape for the cavity. I do plan one of those aluminum pickguard shields. If it is terribly noisy I can always go back and shield the cavity. My current strat has EMG SA pickups and is not noisy.

I want this one to be a bit more traditional sounding so I went with these pickups. I'm a huge Hendrix and Robin Trower fan so it did not hurt that the description used their names (call me sucker).

http://store.guitarfetish.com/gfspiialiiha.html

I hope it sounds good when its done. Anyone have any experience with the GFS Premium II AlnicoII pickups? How do they sound.

Fantastic! Must say, I love what you're showing of your landscape. I've visited some brilliant spots in your country but so far I haven't got to NJ. From your pix it looks like that's got to be added to the "to do" list! :D

Cheers man - C

Ceri,

If you ever come to NJ, Hibachi or Portuguese dinner is on me. Next week we're hiking the Palisades on the Northeast of NJ and I'll be sure to post a pic or two. We should start a thread in the lounge for pics of natural beauty in our own backyards for forumites.

Cheers back at ya
