Congrats again to Kong.

But now I need to talk to BoK. Stacy (if I may), your "If I'm talking you should be taking notes" T-shirt made me laugh and I called my wife in to see it because she needs one like it, I do believe. :D Whilst examining it she said what a pretty smile you have. I hinted at that earlier, though I kinda suspect it's not the sort of thing I should be saying to another man's wife. However, since it is really now my wife's comment perhaps it's OK? As I said above: congrats, Kong. 8)

While we're about it I just wanted to say; this is a fab photo by anyone's standards. Too cool!

And since the Kong-Caster is finished and since we seem to be posting "what I did this summer" pictures... this is what I've just been up to:

Been in Denmark, where they are much into their Viking past. At a spot called Skuldelev on Roskilde Fjord they discovered a group of vessels that had been deliberately scuttled to block a channel from attack around 1030 (a couple of years after my local pub was established, if you recall) and were partially preserved for a thousand years in the mud on the sea bed. Here's the lifted, restored remains of one of them (Ceri in Fender polo shirt, in a feeble attempt to make it relevant to this website):
Image

Archaeologists examine those remains in vast detail and build very accurate replicas of the original ships. Here's the biggest of 'em (mast off):
Image

Sadly, rank amateurs don't get to sail that one. But I have spent my time pottering around the fjord in these little reconstructed square riggers and it's a heap of fun:

This is a reconstruction of another Viking ship. This one is called Roar Ege (which for the couple who've wondered is where my YouTube username comes from), and in tiny little boats like this the Vikings regularly sailed to Iceland and Greenland and at least once to North America, 500 years before Columbus. Brave or just increadibly stupid?:
Image

One day I'd love to sail the bigger ship (Sea Stallion) out at sea. Here are some other people's photos that show why:

So that's why I haven't been around the Forum much lately...

Fabulous pictures Mr. Ceri. Viking adventures, I like your style. Our big adventure was a tubing trip down the Delaware River yesterday, me on a rapidly deflating inner tube. After 4 hours, I was thoroughly sun baked and I had about 1/4 lb of air pressure left. It was pretty bad when I actually had to chase Mrs Kong on foot for about 100 yards due to bottoming out in the shallows.

Ceri - this is one of the reasons my re-finish job took so long, damn writer's cramp...

Yes, you may :) I wear that to work on days when I REALLY need my students to pay attention. On this particular day, I was giving a presentation on Mt. St. Helens as part of my grade, so I wanted to make sure everyone was paying attention. A good laugh was had by all when I got up to start talking. It's available in the What On Earth Catalog, www.whatonearthcatalog.com, if you're interested in a Christmas gift :)

Thank you for the compliment, and thank Mrs. C too. 8)

You complimented me on my beach photo, those are breathtaking! I'd love to see the White Cliffs from that perspective. Shoot I'd love to see the White Cliffs period!

Seems like you've had a great summer vacation so far. Thanks for sharing with us! I wonder what's next!?

And Andy, yes, that was a fine Dam photo :D One of my fellow students on the trip did a presentation on the Elwha Dam which is being removed next year. We received buttons that said this was the Last Dam Summer, and she kept referring to Dam studies and this Dam presentation. We were cracking up!

OK, I have to come back on that. You really have a very good eye indeed for the geology to spot that those are the White Cliffs of Dover (bluebirds over, etc).

Total respect. Your students are definitely in safe hands. 8)

It's sort of my "thing" to know about geologic places. In our house, when the TV is on, generally it's on the History Channel, Discovery Channel or National Geographic Channel. I have a couple of pieces of the White Cliffs, none that I've collected myself. I "inherited" one when I got the rock & mineral collection moved to my classroom at school, and I was given one as a souvenir from a friend who visited. The fact that it's a deposit of microscopic marine organism shells is fascinating to me, as is the fact that you can write on a chalkboard with it. Geology on that kind of scale is amazing to me as a small, generally insignificant human whose existence on the planet is a blink of an eye.

There's so much of this world I still need to see...

Ha - well it would be my absolute honor and pleasure to send you any small samples you'd like from my humble little island, if it would be of use? :D

I'm not so far from the White Cliffs - but it sounds like you have that one covered. In a few weeks I plan a visit to Chesil Beach, where Mary Anning almost single-handedly invented palaeontology in the early 19th century - as I'm sure you know. Fascinating woman... Want me to send you a lump of that place? If I find a nice ammonite I can't guarantee that I'll be prepared to part with it; but from decades ago I seem to recall you can virtually pick up belemnites by the handful from the bottom of the cliffs. Care for a pocketful?

...It's these unexpected digressions that make the Fender Forum fun, to my mind.

PLEASE!! It would all be a fantastic addition to both my academic and personal collections. If you do find an ammonite, I'd be MORE than happy to *ahem* take it off your hands, at least to borrow to show my students. :D

The more we think about it, the more we're very seriously planning a jaunt across the pond next summer. I don't think it will take much convincing either

I enjoy the digressions as well, but I'm not sure a Strat build thread is necessarily the place to have these kinds of conversations...but when you're married to the author, I think it's OK :)

I think it is absolutely the right place for this. Frankly, there's a limit to the geeky guitar stuff even the regular obsessives can soak up!

If I find something geologically worthwhile it is yours. I have your other half's email and will trouble him for a postal address if I turn something up. Meantime, that fella of yours has established good relations here with several of us this side of the pond. I believe you both can be sure of a friendly welcome as and when you show up. So don't be strangers! :D

...The Missus and I happen to be coming Stateside next month, but sadly not to your part of the country. Ah well: 'nother time.

Best - C

Seriously nice pics Ceri & BoK, Mt St Helens looks stunning I don't think any picture could do it justice though eh, I think it's one of those places you could only take in by being there in person, that huge gouge out the side wow!!!!

Thanks Rip :) It looked almost surreal and fake standing there. The sun was so bright and it was SO hot that it looked like a painting way out there. I agree, the photos don't do it justice, but other than dragging it back east, that's the best I could've done :D That gouge was from the 1980 eruption. The volcano lost the top ~1300 feet of its summit, and it all went flowing down 3 rivers in the area, mixing with the water to create mudflows. The lumps in the middle are lava domes, where the volcano is filling itself back in. If the current activity continues, it will refill in about 200 yrs, just long enough for everyone around to forget how destructive the 1980 eruption was.

Like I said, it took all of my strength NOT to jump the barricades and go running for the crater. That and the fact that I was getting married in 2 weeks

viking ships..ahhh. My sister is married to a Norwegian and has been living in Norway for almost 20 years. I visit once every two years and my first visit to Norway my new family took me to the Vikingskipshuset (translated viking ship museum).

The few ships on display are originals...and not very pretty (I guess if you had found a one thousand+ year old Strat it would be in similar condition), but nonetheless...I appreciated it.
