Lovin' the metallic, Kong. Nicely done! Cool

Thanks guys. Just finished the 4 initial coats of clear. Now I'll leave it alone for 24 hours and start shooting the remaining clear coats when the weather cooperates. Not looking forward to all the sanding ... I hate sanding :P The orange peel on this thing is going to be insane.

Good luck with the sanding. Make sure you've got some tunes playing to help pass the time!

Andy (well impressed!)

Hi Kong: that is one of the easier mysteries of lacquer to solve. You just gotta spray the right amount, neither more nor less.

In other words, you have to spray enough that all the individual drops of lacquer coming out of the nozzle join together into a continuous film as they land on the surface. But no more.

You don't want to continue spraying so that enough lacquer accumulates on the surface that it can move around and form runs and puddles.

Having good lighting is vital so that you can see exactly what you are doing. And where you're working you've got that one covered. Spraying consistently from the right distance and not moving slower or faster, closer or further away, are key to getting the stuff to go on evenly. From the look of your green you've got that one sussed too.

Most of all, if a layer of clear doesn't go on evenly don't worry - and don't spray more to try and rectify it. One of the nice things about nitro (apart from the smell – aaaahh!) is that the next layer will partially re-dissolve the previous one and even it out.

So if anything err on the side of under-spraying rather than over. You can always do another coat. And another. The opposite results in runs - and sanding out runs is REALLY BORING!!!

Don't sweat it, man. By the looks of it you are doing absolutely fine! :D

Cheers - C

Good advice Ceri...

Thin coats, and use an extra coat to build thickness, rather than chancing a thick coat.

One thing as well, nitro lacquer is one of the easier finish options to wet sand.

Shot 4 coats of clear today over the initial 4 light coats. I'm not quite as confident shooting the clear coat as I am shooting the color, but it still looks like it is coming out okay.

Had a slight mishap today. The guitar has been hanging from a black rubber bungee cord. Today between coats, I went to take it down and the bungee cord fell and the hook hit the front of the guitar in 2 small spots. It did not make me happy, but it doesn't look too bad.

I will probably do at least 4 more coats of clear.

Here are a few shots of the guitar now. Guitar is not as blue as the pictures show. It is much more of a very beautiful silvery green.

Don't worry: we can all help with that. Every day we'll post asking: "Is it ready yet?"

Is it ready yet?

Is it ready yet?

...   :D

And if anyone is not impressed with what they're seeing in the photos it just means they've never tried shooting metallic paint.

Way to go, Kong! 8)

Is beautiful, utterly gorgeous, perhaps enough so to swerve me away from red as my favourite strat colour.

Very high praise from the Ninja-Master himself, arigato!!

I'm really overwhelmed with all of the nice comments from all of you! If this thing comes out decent at all it is thanks to guys like Ceri, Twelvebar, Ninja, too many more to list ... apologies to all the others that have helped and I forgot to mention. The advice I've received directly as well as from the other fine project examples shared here are like an advanced education. No way a first timer could get decent results without it! 8)

This picture with the flash is closer to the actual color in sunlight ..

I KNOW man... I'm at that stage with mine, and waiting SUCKS. :(

Looking good Kong, I know metallic is a biotch to spray on properly - looks like beginners luck for you, score!

Continuing to watch with interest - all aspects of this thread! 8)

And welcome to the Forum Mrs-to-be Kong. :D

Cheers - C

Ceri, I interpreted that as an invitation to join the forum, so here I am. :D I am not musical in the least, but I've sure learned alot from watching/listening to my sweetheart. I'm sure we'll have more hiking/traveling pics as the summer goes on. We'll definitely put up some of my upcoming trip to Washington once I return. Thanks for encouraging Kong as he refinishes his guitar, and definitely ask him "Is it ready yet?" once he's done with the clear coats...he'll LOVE that (sarcasm intended!)
