my dad bought me a used strat in 1964. i remember it being only a year or two old when i got it.

i just dug up an old picture. it was lake placid blue with a maple neck.

could the guitar be older than i thought? if it is, i am now really upset that i sold it in the early 70's

Look at the picture again and count the pickguard screws (carefull not to include the neck pickup screws in that count). If you count 11 screws, it was an early '60's strat with a maple neck. If you count 7 or 8 screws, it was a '50's strat. In either case, it was a purdy valuable strat. An early 60's with a maple cap neck is rare and of course the 50's models, while not as rare, are highly desirable. -Marty

+1

As well, the 11-screw pickguard (if that's what you have) should be a W/B/W 3-ply type with the exposed top laminate appearing slightly greenish. An 8-screw pickguard would be a single-ply white.

[quote="Getignited"]I have yet to see another 1963 black strat (fake or original) with the maple fretboard]
I know this was a while ago but I was doing a bit of digging on the same subject.
Tommy Bolin who was guitarist in deep purple after Blackmore left, used a '63 strat with a maple neck I think it was a rare one of special order back in the day.Image
