Do you think this is the best way ? I had read this before.

I am firmly in the camp of no polish of any kind. I use a micro fibre cloth, a little breath and some elbow grease. for anything bigger than a finger print very very slighty dampening the area (usually with a litlle saliva,) is OK. If you have something major to clean off of a nitro finish and need a slvent, use naptha (some lighter fluids are naptha, some are a blend o naptha and other things, and some aren't naptha at all, so be careful,) naptha won't dissolve the nitrocellulose, and it evaporates very quickly and non streakilly.

Alright, thanks for the info. I know that diff manuf. have all types of
polish for these nitro finishes, but I'm always learry of the polishes offered.

+1 on this issue.

An amusing item of trivia: saliva may sound yukky, but it has a very honorable history as a cleaning substance. In the fine art world saliva is one of the principle substances used to clean "old master" paintings. Saliva contains enzymes and such that are exactly the ticket for the job.

If you go to a gallery and see a Rembrandt or whatever that has been highly cleaned a lot of that will be from a guy sitting in front of it for months on end spitting on cotton buds and rubbing away gently at the surface.

There's a little more to it than that, to be sure - but that really is a big part of what goes on. Weird, huh?

Oh dear. So how do we tell what is in our lighter fluid? Does it say on the can?

I use guitar polish but if you own a Hwy 1 be careful how much pressure you use while wiping it down. I notice if you apply too much pressure in one area it`ll bring it to a low gloss and make that spot stand out.

It should, And i'll qualify this by saying i can only remember one time I found one that wasn't naptha at all, and one time where it said it was blended with other ingredients, I wish I could remember the brand names. (and no I wasn't looking at butane!! )

The vast majority are naptha. I don't know how the regulations are in other parts of the world, but here even if a company wants to keep their recipes secret here, they have to include an ingredient list in the first aid and safety info, so you can look there. That's actually how I found out one brand of camp fuel I was looking at getting wasn't pure naptha either, so that's also something to look at.
naptha goes back to ancient times, the Ancient Greeks even used it for fuel for flamethrowers, some kind of naptha blend was the legendary 'Greek Fire' used by the Byzantines in sea battle.

A good product that I'm using in my shop to clean my guitars having french polish (shellac) & nitro is the Meguiar's Show car Glaze no 7. No silicone & abrasive. Most of the time I'm using the Scottt (Kinberly-Clark) shop blue towels. Never put the product over the guitar but a small amount onto the towel, polish gently in grain direction, and cleanup using another dry towel.
Beautifull result!

i say don't clean it, thats part of the beauty of the nitro finish is how it gets worn and dirty

Yeah BlackCatBones got the right idea, they will probably get that powdery faded glow when they get to be 25 years old if they don't get spit shined everyday. But then again its all in what you like. But I do like the Mojo that BCatBone speaks of!

A soft microfiber cloth. Wipe your guitar down after each use and any time it collects dust.

Gibson makes a good guitar cleaner that is safe for nitro finishes.
