Hi everyone!

Has anyone tried CS '69 pups in a HWY1?

I just can't seem to get along with the tone in my HWY1 and I'm considering buying a set of '69s. A friend of mine had a Classic Player Series (MIM) Strat with those pups and it sounded really friggin' good with my amp.I wanna run the '69s pretty hot to get some more sustain out of 'em if I can.

Guess all those hours of playing my SG have made me a sustain nut...I would never expect or want that kinda sustain from a Strat though.

Any tips or hints? Anyone tried Tonerider pups? Are they crap? Help a Strat lover in need......peace....

Hmmm......I can totally agree with you on that one.
I presently own 7 (!!??!) Highway One Stratocaster HSS's and I 'gutted' them all and put in ALL new pickups!
I couldn't stand the weak, cheesy, stock single coils and weak, anemic humbucking pickups pickups....they were awful!!
The guitars themselves are nicely built, resonant pieces of wood.

What I have MOST pleased with is the installation of (believe it or not)
the DiMarzio Area series if pickups. I have a combination of 58's, 61's and 67's.
The 58's and 67's, I find are GREAT in the neck position.
I like the 61's for the middle.
For the bridge...on a SSS formatted Strat....I prefer the DP-420 Virtual Solo. Very P-90 like, full, and no so 'ice pick in the forehead' as a standard single coil bridge pup.
And my latest "love" for the humbucker...is Dimarzio's 36th Anniv. P.A.F.....nice vintage powered, CLASSIC humbucker tones.

I also have some Gibson humbuckers and Fender Vintage Noiseless in some of the others.

There are some GREAT noiseless options out there, and you will sacrifice NOTHING in sound!

Keep in mind....with the choice you're thinking of...the 69's.....you WILL have the ever persistant, irritating 60 cycle hum.

I have 69s in my standard mim with the large trem block. These pickups work well clean and driven. These are my favorite.

Just to remind you cs69 set is not RW/RP so you will experienc hum in the position 2 and 4. My particular guitar is well shielded and I use quality cables. The hum is not noticeable at all.

HWY1 electronic circuit might give you a variation of tone. My 09 mim standard has mia standard CTS pots, switch and electronics without the delta tone pot and I also wired the tone control to the bridge pickup.

I am an SG player, too. While it sustains great, my SSS Strat sustains more. So it is definitely possible. Also, the common complaint about the Hwy 1 is the pickups. So your choice in the CS '69s will likely be perfect. I have not played them myself, but everyone I know with em is extremely happy with them. Sorry if this is only a modest help, at best ...

These Custom Shop 69's match perfectly the Highway One and US Special Stratocasters, especially the maple-neck models!

My only gripe was Fender doesn't offer these guitars in Olympic and Vintage White, which are closely associated with Jimi Hendrix :x

One of my favourite mods is to have a Highway One maple neck with a large reversed headstock and an aged parchment pickguard with a reversed bridge pickup slot for the reverse-staggered bridge pickup. Ideal for those Hendrix fans wanting to have more of an authentic Voodoocaster vibe on their favorite Highway One and American Special guitars.

Found the font button...have we?

Fender DID offer something along those lines a few years back. The neck is very similar to my Highway One's...a nice chunky "C" shape and all those other things you mentioned.
It was a MIM Strat called the 60's Reverse Special.
Mine now has a DiMarzio Area 67(n) Area 58(m) and a Solo Pro(br.) along with Graph Tech saddles.

I like the stock pick-ups in my Highway One... But then I'm not one to modify things. You won't be dissapointed if you put '69's in yours though. I'v got a '69 custom shop which has them.
I dunno if its just mine, but the bridge-pickup with the 69's have lower out-put level to the neck position. The neck-pickup seems alot fuller than the bridge.

One of my guitars is an '05 Honey Blonde Hwy1 Strat that I replaced the stock pups with CS69s....I like the sound much better.

Here are some soundclips :

Did the Custom '69s work with the S-1 system?

Did Fender offer these pickups as a calibrated RW/RP set?

Another favourite guitar mod is to stick these babies on an American Deluxe Strat HSS LT. I'm also considering to replace the stock no-load pots with a Grease Bucket circuit and change the stock DH-1 with a Duncan Jeff Beck Trembucker, which compliments perfectly the '69s in the neck and the middle positions, although I saw this guitar discontinued as of 2007.

I like them too... and I've found out the guitar sounds much better lowering them a lot.
BTW, mine is 2002 (maple neck and honey blonde 8)) and pickups outputs are 5,84k 5,72k and 5,64k for neck, middle and bridge. Great twang sound with a P1 ax84 amp.
