I'm not an expert, but I play one on the internet.

It's under warranty. I'd take pics of it and return it for repair or replacement. If it comes back scratched, you have the pics for
your claim against them.

Don't leave home without it!

Before you do anything just try working the pot from low to high and back over and over again. Try it about a dozen times and see if it cleans up. If that doesn't work you can also try taking the knob off and spray just a little contact cleaner at the base of the shaft. Sometimes that will get it clean if it's just slightly dirty. But for a Strat that new - I would seriously consider taking it back.
