Hey dudes!

I just had a question about setting up the tremolo.

I have notced that when Blackmore and Malmsteen uses the tremolo, the guitar does not go out of tune.
I have a Fender American Plus with the original tremolo. I have put it all the way down onto the body so its like a hardtail. And when I use the tremolo the guitar might go out of tune, it depends how crazy I am with it, but when I try to do like Blackmore and Malmsteen it tends to go out of tune.
Is that because I have put it all the way down to the body?

I found exactly that. When the tremolo's set flush to the body it cant return to pitch properly.

Take a properly set floating trem at concertpitch. Call that 0 position. You bend up by raising the bar then release. The trem can return back to that perfect 0 position. The strings are stretched and want to return back to their optimum balance point set between themselves and the trem springs. The trem can dip down plenty theres nothing restricting it doing so.

Now Imagine you dip the note then release. The springs become over strectched then want to return to their balance point to the strings tension. On a perfectly set floating trem its not a problem. The trem can find its own balance point. With a flush set trem, the trem is restricted in being able to find its balance point by 50%, or that big bit of wood we call the guitar body.

I don`t screw mine all the way down and I`m not that crazy with it. I`ve never had a problem with it going out of tune and when I do use it and let go of it, it just swings out of the way on its own.

This is my experience as well.

I use nut grease(graphite) on the bridge and nut. I have no problems at all. I wish I would have known this years ago. Before I discovered this I thought you had to have a locking nut to prevent the strings from going out of tune. Now, I would never buy guitar with the stupid locking nuts.

Ya know...that's really a very good video. It's kind of funny...with all of the questions I've tried to answer on these forums and others about tuning issues with Strats...my typical dissertations in regards to proper setups and all, I never really thought to mention that stuff even though it's basically what I do each and every time I change strings! LOL!!! Stretching the strings on -any- guitar with a trem is hugely important and getting them to seat properly at the nut and the bridge...I guess that's just stuff I do "automatically" anymore...I never really even think about it.

A proper setup is of course a big issue...as the OP's comments about screwing the trem all the way back would seem to indicate but yea...that's simply some good advice in that vid.

So much for my career as a "guitar advice columnist", LOL!!!

Thanks for sharing!

the small bullet end at the Fender strings make the big difference
one don't even need anything else
not to mention locking tuner and tremolo
