I noticed that I can adjust the overall action with the 2 pivot screws once I get all the saddle height adjustments to match the fret radius. Does anyone else do it this way?

Also, I could not get the intonation on the low E because the spring was all the way compressed and I still needed a bit more adjustment. I removed the spring to get the extra adjustment, and while I was at it, I removed all the springs. The only reason for the springs that I can see is that they hold the saddles in place while the strings are off the guitar for a string change. Is there another purpose for these springs other than that?

Virtually everyone does it this way.

The spring holds the saddles and intonation screws in place even with the strings on. Pressure on the bridge from your palm and/or depressing the tremolo can and will shift both around. In the case of the low E though, many players either cut the spring in half or remove it as there is negligible tracking distance left for the intonation screw when on many a Strat, the low E is properly intonated.
