I have a 2007 American Deluxe HSS Strat. The S-1 switching diagram that I downloaded shows that with the 5-way selector in the 5th position, (all the way back), only the humbucker is activated. It shows that the humbucker (both coils) are activated with the S-1 switch up or down. I can't really tell a difference in the sound. Do they really have both coils active on both settings? Is there any way to get the single-coil sound out of the bridge pickup? Maybe it's my ears, but I can't tell a difference.

here's the diagram for the S-1 HSS:

It seems that position 5 is just the humbucker with either switch setting. So your ears are fine and no, there's not a way to get a single coil tone the way the guitar is currently wired.
