On the whole big/tall frets vs smaller frets, I prefer bigger frets, but that aside I look at it this way: it's nice to know that in a year or so when I play the hell out of my Am Special and the frets wear down some... I'm going to be able to level and crown this bad baby and still have plenty left on it.

I tried one -finally- today. I've been looking for but they were all gone from the two Guitar Center stores in the area. They got one at Sam Ash and I absolutely LOVED it. It has almost everything I was looking for in my next Strat. I like the jumbo frets, love the '70s style headstock with the recessed truss rod, skunk stripe, four bolt neck, the vintage tremolo is perfect, construction is flawless and the sound is incredible.
If it wasn't for the extra fret (I like them as vintage-looking as possible) and the two-tone sunburst I could almost have an exact replica of Ritchie Blackmore's late '69 Strat, which is my dream someday...

I'm going back to the store tomorrow morning, I fell in love with it. Can't wait.

I went back to the store and tried it again today, this time plugged in. Surprisingly the bridge pickup is wired to the back tone pot and the neck pickup is wired to the front tone pot with the middle wide open, like on a Jimmie Vaughan strat. Which means that if I got it, it would need absolutely zero modifications. I wish I could pull it off.

American Specials and Highway Ones are pretty much the same except for the painting and pickup configuration. What becomes a matter of taste.
I really prefered the Highway One at the moment, the American Special didn't seemed to get Gilmour solos like Comfortable Numb and the Highway One just nails them with that Hot Alnico's III, and Hendrix sounds amazing on them too. On the other hand the Texas Specials from the American Special are the best or SRV and all kinds of blues, but that about that. I've choosed versatility and took the Highway One home.
