I put my Stratacoustic in to get the action lowered last week, when I got it home today and plugged it in only the E B and A strings were amplified, the others were strangely mute. The guitar was fine before I brought it in.It appears that the tech shaved or filed the bottom of the bridge to lower the action are there peizo electric pickups under each string under the bridge to amplify the sound as in other guitars? If so is it possible to disturb something to cause this problem?I phoned the shop but their tech is off today and they want me to call him tomorrow when he's back but I'd like to know before hand if my hunch is right.Any expert input would be greatly appreciated,Thanks.

Hello!
I have a Godin XTSA which has hexaphonic pezio saddles. One day the A string stopped working, I loosened the string, lifted it off and lightly cleaned the saddle. its been fine ever since.

I rekon some dirt has got in there during the work on the bridge. Use a clean paint brush to clean the saddles and see if that works. They are, as i understand, very sensitive.

Let us know how you get on

Hope this helps

Andy

Hi guitslinger: just so's you know I'm not ignoring your request...

I've seen Q&A items in guitar magazines about just this sort of issue with piezos, so I'm sure it is a recognised problem with a clear solution. But since I have no personal experience with it I'm not going to muddy the water by offering a half-remembered fix. (It may be just as Andy says, above; though I have a notion of other possibilities too.)

Over to one of the qualified techs round here to deal with it thoroughly. I suspect your answer will be along shortly... :D

Cheers - C

It can be any one or any combination of the following: The deficient strings are not in firm contact with the bridge saddle; the piezo is not solidly mating with the bridge under these strings; the piezo is not solidly mating with the guitar's body below these strings; the individual receptors for these strings are crushed.

On the up side, whatever the root cause(s), you have an outright warranty issue with the tech here.

In the future, always inspect, play and approve all services done to your guitar(s) BEFORE you pay and leave the shop.

You're welcome. I edited my post for one more possibility but this would be highly unlikely unless of course, this tech you went to is a profound hack.

Sight unseen and on an experienced guess, I'd say the odds are that the saddle was reduced unevenly and excessively to the point where shims had to be installed and/or said 'tech' didn't clean off the debris from the saddle as he repeatedly kept putting the saddle back into your guitar to measure incremental heights as he proceeded. Again, this is all sight unseen and an experienced guess. Regardless though, after an unchecked blunder like this on the 'tech's' part, I doubt very strongly you'll get the real truth as to the cause(s) once and if corrected by him.

I highly suspect the bottom of the saddle is not flat probably due to the recent height adjustment. I had exactly the same on my Malibu, the high E wasnt sounding when amplified. I removed the saddle (measured and drew a copy for future reference) put the underside of it against my engineers ruler and saw a curve under the d,g,b string position. A couple of passed with a file and it was all sorted.

Just back from a gig (1 hour ago) and used that guitar a bit. It performed great, really even across the strings when amplified now. I took a bit of a risk as I only have a 5 watt amp in the house. I couldnt check I'd solved the problem prior to gigging it. Luckily it all went swimmingly.
