I bought a strat from my uncle about twelve years ago (along with an M-80 fender amp). Shortly afterwards my Band broke up and college got in the way and geeze I think my life has been one huge cliche. Any way I am looking at picking up the old hobby again.

One of my potentiometer's is going bad. In researching to find out which one should go in there I am having a hard time determining what kind of Strat I have. the serial number is E-318197 which puts it being manufactured somewhere between 82-85 I think. the odd thing is my cord jack is not on the face of the body but on the bottom and instead of the 5 way switch I have three individual buttons that turn on the pick-ups. Anyone else have this set-up? Was it a special run or something? Also do all strats use a battery?

Back to the potentiometer. It looks like a solid shaft pot, what is the difference between 250k and 500k?

Thanks for any help.

I don't know the answer to all your questions, but only guitars with active circuitry have batteries. I have a strat that takes a battery and one of the tone pots gives a 15db gain if you need. Otherwise strats usually don't have batteries. For the potentiometers I was under the impression that 250K are used for single coils and 500K are used for hummbuckers. I am not sure if that is the only things you can use them with but I think thats ussually how they are used. Most strats take 250K. I have a tele with humbuckers and even that uses a 250k although i hear the 500k makes them sound better.

Sounds like you have a Strat Elite. Those had the 3 button switching & the jack on the side. They were only made from '83 ~ '85, and yours is most likely an '83, based on the serial #.

You need to use 250K pots.

thanks guys. sorry the reply took so long but I can't get used to the BB that only works during mountain time working hours. But both of your were correct I happened to be playing it the other day and noticed on the plate that covers the neck truss and bolt that it says Fender Elite on it.

Thanks for the help guys.
