Used to leave it on because I had not reason to take it off. I play a lot so I have to change the strings on my guitar VERY frequently so starting about a year ago I took it off and never put it back on. Haven't looked back since :P

I have a tortoise pickguard and backplate. Of course, having the backplate installed negates showing six screw holes and the conglomeration of springs (and a wire) but it certainly makes the back of the guitar more cosmetically pleasing. In other words, I feel the guitar looks the way better with it installed. Besides, the backplate's six string holes line up perfectly with the tremolo block's six string holes so for me, there's no logical reason to leave it off. YMMV.

+1 :)

I always leave them on, it just seems indecent not to. :)

I've always left it off for ease of changing strings

72% preserving their dignity, and possibly their junk, at this stage. I'm in the minority. It's too small a sample to be reliable, but pretty interesting. I woulda thought it was the other way around, and I woulda been wrong.

besides making it easy to change the strings, i love how the Strat looks 'bare' on all my strats.. now, mine's a relic, so it really goes with the look. some say, it's a protection from belt buckles, anyway, i usually wear my guitars lower than my waist.

John Mayer and SRV can't go wrong with it..

I leave it off because when you remove all your strings, the trem block doesn't line up with the holes in the plate, which kind of leaves them utterly redundant really!! I also like to play around with springs/and spring tension so it also facilitates that.

It makes string changing a lot easier to leave it off,if not you have to depress the vibrato to access the string holes.I leave the cover off my MIM L/H Strat strung right as it is my "Hendrix"guitar and Jimi got a lot of his different sounds by flicking the springs while playing such as in Machine Gun and 3rd Stone From The Sun.

As far as the string changing issue, yes the hole does not line up just right with the trem block, but the difference to me is minimal. Even though the strings indeed do catch, it's not a big hassle to me.
I leave it on.

Yeah, I like the bare look. A plastic cover on there just looks weird to me now.
Nude up people! Come on freeballers, we're bein outvoted here.... 8)

Well, it's funny if it's happening to someone else! I'm not game enough to set up a situation where it could happen.

I read in an old issue of a Premier Guitar mag that the tone is better without the trem cover. I am not making this up. I leave mine off for less esoteric reasons.
