Well the one I did three weeks ago, removing the volume knob and pot and rewiring it. I still am in my glory over this mod as there is no more knocking the volume low or feeling cramped when playing diatonic passages. When I saw Gatton did this he just left the empty hole but I put a cool little decal over it and even love the look.

My beloved clapton strat of eight years has been played to the point of needing a re-fret... had a local guy do it and add a compound radius fretboard of 11-14 inches... just got it back... the fretboard is lightning fast  Why doesn't fender offer flatter radius's in more models?

I just today got my very first fender strat and went with the American Standard. The only Mod it will get is a string change, other then that I see no need at all to mess around with it.

The best MOD you can do is to have a professional setup done, including any nut work. That should always be the first thing.

Best mod? Plus one for straplocks. It's just about the easiest mod you can do, I mean, if you lack the dexterity to undo two screws and do two new ones and a couple of nuts up, then you're probably wasting your time with a guitar in the first place. I don't even think of it as a mod anymore, it's more like correcting a standard factory fault. I had a couple of guitars hit the deck and too many close calls before I decided enough was enough and fitted them to ALL my guitars (and I have more guitars than I could ever need - way, way more than my ability demands too !). It's super-easy to reverse as well :D

I also like a humbucker in the bridge, but if you have a humbucker in the bridge, I think you have to have a coil tap on the volume pot, so you can still get something approaching a standard mid+bridge, because a strat just has to have mid+bridge, no?

p.s. I am tempted by the neck+bridge mod too - never tried it but I've only ever heard folk say how good it is

on a more serious note, how many of us have tried the 50s wiring mod? i'd love to hear a demo. i have a really bright amp so i'm a bit reluctant.

My fav. mod for a Stratocaster is the series/parallel knob. Turning the 2nd tone knob into a 3way switch putting the neck+middle and bridge+middle in series doubling the output and pushing the mids. turn the 2nd tone knob to 10 and you have a normal Strat, put it on 0 and you have the pickups in series.
All other switching still works as normal.
I use it on my Antigua and it´s a tone machine, from clean to high gain lead sounds.

Cheers,
Robin

I tried the 50s Gibson wiring mod and as soon as I heard it I went straight back to standard wiring. It does stop treble bleed, but not as much as the Kinman circuit, which works just fine. The 50s mod makes your tone control weird tho, turned down it really kills your volume too.

thanks! perhaps that's why i've never found a demo on youtube. i've heard it changes your overall tone but losing the control does put me off!

My favorite mod is replacing the stock pots & switch with a blender kit from Acme Guitar Works. I originally ordered one for my MIJ '62 mainly to replace a cranky volume pot and found that I loved being able to blend the neck and bridge pups as I see fit. The volume controls now works smooth as silk, and I also like having the middle knob as a master tone, instead of having two tone controls. Eventually I ordered the same setup for my '62 AVRI. It's likely that I would install this on any Strat I own, unless it had a HB in the bridge position.

@Furvel that sounds sweet actually, wouldn't mind trying that.
I love the sound of the neck and bridge on my Strat, unique.

I always move the tone the control from the middle pickup to share with the neck. Then have the bridge on its own tone control for both MIM and MIA strats.
