Recently, I've become a 'middle' man (ha ha). Combine that with a little overdrive and a Deluxe Mistress in Filter Matrix mode, and you got tone that you don't hear all the time.

I play all rythm stuff with bridge and solos with neckpup. Probably 'cos I love Dave Murray:)

E: Clean stuff goes always with neckpup

I keep looking for easy songs to pick... being a noob at guitar has it's limitations. I have just about nailed the lead riff on Walk Don't Run (I know... it's too easy but you gotta start somewhere) and I always play that on bridge, no boost, no load on tone, with lots of reverb. That gives me the great metallic twang the original seems to have. Sounds great through my little Vintage 5! 8)

Will barre chords ever get easier?

Well, I've always loved the Neck pup and the Neck Mid position.
I like the warmer tones myself, but lately have been giving the other options a fair go and am coming round to the advantages of the brighter tones.

almost always Bridge. The other four positions are just in case i feel like a muddy sound which is never.

If you are getting mud in the other four positions than you either need to lower the pickups or look into new ones.

All of them, sometime during just one tune.

A gravitate towards the neck pickup, but I use all 5 positions quite a bit.

I use 4 an 5 most, bridge only for leads,, and bridge/middle when i want to treat myself to delicate tone. the middle pup alone is hideous, and i can't stand it

My old 1970 Strat I use the 3 & 2 positions: can't stand the Ice pick sound of that 1 position bridge PU. My switch never stays in the 'in-between' position, B/T 3&2, so I'm switching it out to a 5 position switch.

On my 1991 Ultra( w/ Lace Sensors) I use the 5, 3, and 1 positions. But with the TBX and the splitter on the bridge dually, it makes it difficult to say which sound I really like. they all sound really good. For instance position 3 is a combination of the bridge dually and the neck PU's, a tele type setup, and I usually split the lower bridge to the off position, leaving the upper bridge on. This creates a shimmery-sound that is good for rhythym, and I'll switch the splitter to the bottom bridge for a thick fat lead. That being said I'll also use the 4 position for the strat quack(PU's bridge+ middle) and I love the dually split( pos. 5), either up or down dually single alone, for a Tele bridge sound. If I use the dually in a humbucker position it has a fat metal sound, so I don't tend to use that in my church gigs.

The Ultra never ceases to amaze me. I am glad I waited until I figured out its sound, because this is the most treasured Fender I own. Thanks to Xhefri and his website( http://www.xhefriguitars.com/ ), I know every nook and cranny of this guitar. The instructions from Fender were worthless.

Yes barre chords will become a reflex. Hang with it
My favorite positions are neck,neck-mid, and mid. I use neck (with the treb cranked down a bit) for my bluesy clean and dirty stuff. The neck-mid position is used mostly for rythym, however the mid postion is used mostly for GD songs, country pickin' or, sometimes crank thereverb for some crazy surf tones. If you want a more pickin' sound go with the bridge.
Now, I am not including some of the effects that take these tones to the next level such as chorus or delay. If you're looking to do some chickin' pickin', compression is a must.
There's alot of different options that I didn't mention. Especially some of the in-between settings that are great. Just play around with them all with different levels of drive, compression, chorus, delay, and what ever else you can think of. Just have fun.
This is all just my opinion so take it for what it is.
I hope this helps,

Russ
