I've seen that video not too long ago.

Kind of like the shock value to it. Most people couldn't get their hands on more than 1 or 2 of the guitars that he has, even during the course of a lifetime.

I say let him do what he wants. (Even though I truly don't care about the "shred"-type style) - Until I can outshred him, I'll keep my mouth shut.

I dunno... I've never had time for Malmsteen... I tried to like him back in the '80s but I just couldn't, so I've not really given him any thought since then. However... I don't really see what's wrong with that clip. He obviously knows that he shouldn't mess with a '54 Strat, and is just stating a fact when he says it doesn't sound like his other guitars. As a player who can't afford one '69 anything, I hate to see these nice old guitars customised in this way as much as the next person... but surely it was Leo Fender's original intention that players alter their instruments as they liked, shown by his creation of a modular system. Trying to put myself in his position, if I had a few guitars that I liked but really weren't worth that much to me -- maybe they were gifts or something, doesn't really matter -- and there was a modification I could perform that turned them into constant players for me, I'd do it. Why not?

As far as keeping them together in that room goes... I doubt he goes in there and has a good old rummage every day, although perhaps he does. Most of them probably aren't going to get dinged about too much, and if they do... well, they're already fairly well beaten up on account of the fact that he actually plays them. Climate-wise I'm sure they're better off in there than any guitar (however pampered) in its case at my house. Initially I thought "How dare he?!"... but the dude's having fun with his toys, and their resale value (if that were a concern) is increased by their association with him rather than their intrinsic qualities (with the exception of genuine rarities)... better than dying surrounded by hermetically sealed pristine guitars.

Malmsteen is a spoiled egotistical tool and doesn't deserve these pieces of guitar history he's currently in possession of.As a collector I make sure that all my guitars are well taken care of,the way I look at it I'm just a temporary custodian of an instrument that if taken care of will serve musicians well for generations to come.A musical instrument can last centuries and bring joy to many musicians over it's lifetime as evidenced by Stradivarious,Guarneri,Amati and other 300+ yr old instruments. The way Malmsteen mishandles "his" instruments leaves little doubt that they won't be around for subsequent generations of musicians to enjoy. What a selfish, egocentric thing to be doing. It truly sickens me to see these beautiful artifacts defiled by scalloping etc. when he could well afford to get an unlimited number of guitars made to his specifications yet he chooses to ruin crucial links in the evolution of guitars.I can't see how someone with such talent could be so obtuse.

I don't particulary like his playing. I choose not to buy his music.

A few observations:

1) some people don't buy vintage strats to collect, they buy them to play them (Ron Wood is another good example)

2) it is entirely possible (though not unheard of) that they may spend most of their lives in cases and were merely brought out and piled up for the sake of that video (shocking concept I know)

3) he's a famous musician - he probably gets numerous guitars just given to him and therefore doesn't see the need to use them or keep them in a glass case because they don't mean that much

4) at the end of the day they probably are taking minimal dings at most (in comparison to what malmsteen does to his guitars onstage!!) - when he dies in 20 years time or whatever, they will still be worth a fortune to his family or whoever he leaves them to, not least because of the fact that he owned them - so there is no real loss in value

Well this post is rather confusing. First if someone is just a guitar collector and does not play we and that includes myself often rag on tham saying what a waste as they were made to be played. Now you have someone that is one of the greatest players in the world though his music is not my cup of tea getting ragged for naturally relicing his Strats.lol Is this not the look Fender makes in the custom shop and then sells for 5 to 10 grand.

There is no doubt he has the biggest ego in the world besides I actually love his interviews as he never holds back and will disrespect any player which is what is funny to me. I have never been able to listen to more than 2 songs of his in a row without getting bored, but when I saw the G3 tour with him on the bill the guy left me speechless and totally stole the show.

I might not buy an album but I would pay just to watch him anytime as it almost seems not human what he can do with a guitar in his hands and is a must see experience. Bottom line the guy is a musician and these are his tools and I guess that is the way he looks at them. Eddie Vanhalen is the same way if anyone has ever seen pictures of 5150 which is his studio ,his guitars are thrown all around the place.

I think the backlash against Yngwie is that his head is so big he does not make himself very likable to any of us. But as far as his skills the $@!&* is he can back it up.lol

With his money he probably don`t care about his gear. I don`t like his style of playing either, but thats his business.

Wow, another jealous hater thread! Call him conceded, call him a $@!&#, but a "talentless shredder", he is not. I can respect talent when I hear it, even if I dont care for the style. You wont find any Malmsteen tracks on my iPod, but damn......that dude can play.
He didnt buy them to look at. He bought them to play. He scalloped the necks because thats how he likes them. I would rather see a vintage Stratocaster get banged around by a player than sit in a glass case in some trust-fund-kid's house.

Whenever I see somebody smash a Guitar, especially a CS, handcrafted piece of art, it makes my stomach churn. :x

I can't imagine being wealthy enough to justify being an "anal polyp" of that magnitude. ^

No problemo, not a question of quantity
But I do have his Tribute Strat as I think it's the epitome of the CS relicing art.

I'm sorry al, I said that only with the quantity
statement, you on the other show a deep
caring and admiration for the guitars you
own.
There was even a statement how you would
watch a video of Jimmy Hendrix doin his
thing, while having your Monterrey pop
displayed. I imagine sitting with a pipe of your
favorite tobacco and a glass of cognac.

My random thoughts in no particular order just in case anyone gives a rat's buttocks:

He's got an ego which will raise and resink the Titanic.

He's got chops but his playing (and personality) becomes irritating rather quickly.

He should really start dressing his age as he surely is looking it.

I think he tosses those guitars around trying to assert that he is their 'master' or some such narcissistic bent.

They are predominantly 70s Strats he's bowling with so no biggie.

At least this isn't another John Mayer thread.

My favorite foods are pizza and hamburgers.

I prefer Rosewood fingerboards and Ash bodies for my Strats.

YMMV.

LOL Martian. I still cant understand why everyone is freaking out. If they put up a video of Bob the CEO of some company and his million dollar collection and they were all behind glass, a lot of people would be bugging and saying guitars are meant to be played not to be on display locked up. So Yngwie does not take the best care but I bet anyone he picks up is set to play dead in tune. Not even Yngwies biggest fans think he is a humble guy.lol The bottom line is he is a great player. As I stated I cant stand his music but when I saw him live I felt like going home and burning my guitars, thats how freakin amazing he was. I would recommend everyone to go see him if you have a chance as you would love him. Now buying a CD is a whole different story.Come to think of it as I ponder what I am writing, why do I hate his music yet he was one of the best performers I have seen. Weird.

Years ago, I watched him play (live). All I came away with was that he was trying to play as many notes as possible in the space of a minute, his playing was completely soulless and he was trying to out do Blackmore by embellishing Blackmore's riffs with his own slant (unsuccessfully, of course). The guy just did absolutely nothing for me. I'd rather hear one sustained note with that perfect vibrato from Leslie West infinitely more than all the nano-second 'diddling' of, "Yngvie".

To all: As always, this is merely IMO where YMMV.
