You can easily tell how many '50s vintage Strats I have owned and played .... ummm, none.

Heck, I've played twice that many!

My only hope is that a real musician (who will actually PLAY it) buys it.

I know its all nice and pristine, but at the end of the day, it's a guitar and should be played - not necessarily gigged or taken out of the house, but played indeed.

I would...

I wouldnt fancy the paypal charges on $90,000, no matter how much I'd made.

Here are two '55's I found to compare with.

http://home.provide.net/~cfh/55strat.html

And another one from Germany.

http://www.vintagestrats.de/VintageStrats.de/1955.html

They all look prety much the same to me.
And of all three here, none of the white plastic yellowed either. :?

Hi there,

I noticed that the dot inlays on the twelfth fret are further apart of each other on the '55 model than the newer models.
Or am I mistaken?

Does anybody knows why and when that was changed?

Thx.

That's right, the dots were about 3.5 or 4 mm wider.

This very informative site http://home.provide.net/~cfh/fender.html
reports that the change happened in 1963.

What's going on with the bass-side cutaway?

Is that just a trick of the light, or is something wrong there?

it looks wrong it isn't a trick of light and it doesn't show up on the back because it is a just a chip.

Wow if everything is on the straight and narrow that is the cleanest 50s Fender I have seen and am really surprised there is a buy it now. Does anyone remember the 62 that sold for over 100 grand 7 or 8 months ago. It was nice but not close to the condition this one is in. I say it is gone some time tomorrow.

Where's Alain in all of this? 89K   That's a downpayment on a Maclaren for someone else I know.

You guys are all right though as the pick guards and knobs just look real white. I dont care if it never came out of the case but there should be some discoloring. I do not think they are fakes but with what they can do now with the relicing process anything is possible. I am not into these Strats but even if I had the money Gruhn or Eldred would be by my side doing an autopsy guitar style before I purchased.

The case appears a bit more care worn, as well as the guitar, for the ownership history given. If this guitar truly dates as it does, and the veracity of the tragic history of the owner is as such, even after 50 years in a case, I would expect better. The guitar appears used beyond the expectation of the story, unless the pics are really poor. I've heard it said that, 'if it's seems too good to be true, it probably isn't.' Hard to judge with these kinds of things considering the odd things which happened to instruments.

Were I a prospective buyer, I would ask that Christy's Auction House do an exhaustive appraisal on this guitar paid for by the seller. Good enough for Clapton is good enough for me, and for $89K the seller should comply.

Doc

If the guitar is in the condition described by the Seller, I think it's a fair price. Buyers tend to think it's overpriced, Sellers tend to think it's underpriced..
It's part of the Fender history.
Plastic parts may remain white. Look at the 1955 mint Strat on page 30 of "The Stratocaster Chronicles" by Tom Wheeler you will see a great example.

Rare in such condition.
