Hello all,

I've seen pictures of a whole bunch of Fender Ultras. All the pictures I've seen have been Ultras having flame tops and backs. What I've not seen are any pictures of is an Ultra with a quilted top and back. I own what appears to be an Ultra with a definite quilted top and back as opposed to the more usual flame.

Are there any gurus out there that might shed some light on this?

Above is a photo

Thanks in advance for any information as to the rarity of a quilted Ultra.

Beauty!! I've seen quilts around.. Probably more later versions of the Ultra than early ones. I have a 1990 flame ultra myself, but sometimes question if its a quilt and not a flame :)

I suppose the quilted maple option was offered around 1994.

I have seen a few quilts. Your guitar is gorgeous. I am a sucker when it comes to flame and quilts. Also if you are in doubt, lift of the pickguard and check for the swimming pool route. You can tell pretty easy without messing it up, just to make sure it did not have a body swap. If indeed you have one of those quilt tops, it bumps the value up a few hundred bucks. NICE.

Guru I am not, but I gotta say it looks flippin' gorgeous! :D

Timber I do know something about. Instrument makers generally distinguish between flame and quilt wood, because that's what customers have come to expect, so in the trade wood is bought and sold under those labels. However, when you're working it sometimes the difference is less catagorical.

Just for example, here is a bookmatched billet I've been working on. You can see that on it's face it is flamed, but across the joining edge it looks quilted. In other words, how it ends up looking on the guitar would depend exactly how you machine it out of the log:

So what I'm getting at is that perhaps back in the '90s Fender specified their Ultras as either FMT or QMT - but maybe not. Perhaps they just did a run of guitars with figured tops and some of them happened to come out looking more quilty than flamey. Someone with a better memory than me of the catalog of the time would have to say for certain.

BTW, da_ardvark, you say the back of your guitar is figured too? I'd love to see a photo of that, if you felt like posting. Figured backs on electric guitars ain't unique, but not so common either...

BTW2: I just love the figure on Blertles' Strat! It's very idiosyncratic. Unusual and interesting! Don't let that one go, Blertles. 8)

Cheers - C

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Since the Mini Floyd bridge was also available in gold I suspect a very few Ultras were fitted with gold hardware as an aftermarket mod.
