Im going to make a Dave Murray guitar replica, the on that he us during the 80s' or the on that he is using now from the Somewhere Back In Time Tour. So what type of strat I have to use, the Fender Stratocaster with a floyd Rose, or a Fender Standard Stratocaster® HSS. And are the these guitars are HSH body routing, and plus an HSH wiring diagram for a 3 way pickup selector?

Can you point us to a good picture?

Is it a sunburst Strat?

I could not say for sure. Someone posted a copy they made of his new one the Black with the buckers that was smoking a few months back.

It depends on which one you are talking about and whether or not you want a double locking tremolo. This link is very informative about his guitars and gear.

As far as routing, I believe they are both HSH; however, I am not sure now.

Post pics when you are done as I am also a big-time Maiden fan.

yeah, Dave used different guitars in the '80s and now ... the original question is quite confusing.

The two guitars that Im talking is the one that fender made replica from Dave Murray's HSH Famous Black guitar. And the brown sunburst with SSS routing with Seymour Duncan Hot Rails Pickups, the main guitar that Dave Murray uses now.

This is for the brown sunburst guitar:

And you all know how his famous black guitar looks like.

So you want to make copies of both guitars?

I just about finished mine, 80's DiMarzio Pickups Ebay,Fender Japan 57 Stratbody, Fender 8 hole pickguard Ebay, Fender R.I middle pickup Ebay, Fender 60's wiring and jack Ebay, Fender Plastic Parts Ebay, Fender 62 Vintage Tremolo Ebay, Flat chrome pickup rings online, I made it the way his is setup with the Volume pot. over the pickup ring like on some of the early video guitar closeups of him soloing, I had to make a Repro Neck with a decal for now until I can afford the real thing, total cost so far $450! I wish I knew how to post pictures for you to see. Good luck with the project!

Dave has also two Custom Classic Strats with a 22-fret birdseye maple neck/fretboard and the same locking bridge and pickup configuration as his brown sunburst rosewood neck Strat he actually plays. There was also another Custom Classic Stratocaster with black plastic parts and a mirror pickguard, which served as a template for the short-lived IRON MAIDEN Strat guitar, made by Fender Japan from 2001 to 2003.

Dave also uses his USA Artist signature Stratocaster, which is actually different than the regular production models, as it shares many of the features found on the Japanese "tribute" HST-57DM guitars (oval neck profile, 5-way switch and an original Floyd vibrato bridge), as opposed to the acurrate vintage replica of the Kossoff-owned Strat which is based.

So which one are you planning on making? The Black or the Sunburst?

I just want to make one of them and to know what each guitar has, first. So then I can choose which of the two to build. Second, I need to know which fender guitar I can get with the budget of $600-$1000.

Hello all, just joined so forgive any gaffes here!!

I've been a long-time fan of Dave Murray as well, and got a luthier here in NZ to complete a similar thing for me, based on the 57 Kossoff. I was most interested in getting something that resembled the famous black one, and due to not being able to get ahold of a DM57 from Japan, decided to jump in and get one comissioned to spec.

The specs on the final build were:

Alder body, maple/RW neck, Gotoh bridge, Sperzel tuners, roller nut. Currently has DiMarzio FRED, Blue Velvet and PAF Pro pickups, and the surrounds on them as well that feature on that famous guitar of Dave's... the pickups are literally HUGE sounding - especially the neck one, it's well worth going to the DiMarzio site and checking these ones out. Had a few options, but went for those in the end.

As I said, it is the tone that he gets that sold me on his way of playing, get many remarks on the neck pickup, which has that classic Dave Murray sound... I held off on recording certain stuff for our band until I got this just so I could lay down some tracks that are - in effect - a tribute to that tone and style of playing.

A picture of me playing this (it's my No.1 at the moment of course!) can be found on my server here, for your interest...

I would like at some stage to get ahold of both the DM57 from Japan AND the
"official" signature version from Fender, but this one will certainly do quite well enough.

I also opted for the synchronised Trem a la Fender USA's version of this guitar, that was a bit of a "do I or don't I" argument in my head for weeks on that particular aspect!

Good luck with your project!

Your Dave Murray-style guitar has an American Standard 22-fret rosewood neck fitted on it. Dave's signature mojo has a maple neck with 21 vintage frets.

Sweet guitar, though. The axe you've made is a partscaster blending the features of a Dave Murray signature model with the warm rosewood fretboard of Dave's "main" sunburst Strat.

Dave uses his US-made artist signature axe these days, which differs from the standard production models in terms of features and specifications.

Ah, only sort of a mix - he's using the RW neck version on Live After Death, on the first five songs at least, and it's this version of the black/white type I wanted - I'd have only gone for the maple neck version if I had the full sunburst body (ie. the one you see in the video for "Flight of Icarus") - and that's in production now actually.

The Kahler does feature on the RW neck one though, but as I said I did leave this out. I've decided to go with a Kahler on the sunburst one being done though.

The 22nd Fret ... well, one can get nitpicky I guess, but, personally I find having the 22nd Fret more useful than bending notes all the way from 21 to 23 or above - especially since I play a lot of Floyd as well :)

I realised I was not only a Fender fan but a Dave fan as well since my favourite 3 guitarists are all curiously Daves - and all use Fender as their main axes... Dave Murray (Iron Maiden), Dave Gilmour (Pink Floyd) and Dave "The Edge" Evans (U2)
