Ah yes...metal. Back it all up with a Tubescreamer. Trust me. I don't play metal, personally, but that little thing will add a nice warm tube sound to just about anything.

As for the guitar and any mods you may make to it during the future, I would suggest a good set of P90s or even some alnico single coils. May be a bit buzzy, but you can't beat that good single-coil sound. :D

For metal, for me and my strat, the rat pedal can do no wrong.

Boss MT-2 and an equalizer pedal...scoop the mids. Humbucker in the bridge (either a SD Pearly Gates or a Dimarzio SD).

Nice and crunchy.

+1

I used to have a Boss Metal Zone. I sort of regret selling it, but it funded my tubescreamer and now my RAT is my go to pedal for anything that calls for heavy distortion or fuzz.

Well Iron Maiden do a good job of it with them as does Yngwie. I would say swap out your pups for stacked humbuckers and you will get three times the output of a single coil. Single coils are not meant for metal though you can get by using pedals. But if that is what you play most of the time go for it. Check out Dimarzios or Duncans and you will find what you are looking for.

I personaly think singlecoils give the best ever sound for metal, honestly. Nothing else delivers attack like a good sharp singlecoil pickup. It's not without its problems though and for modern black metal I wouldnt use one. Now if 77-81 era motorhead were the required tone, you wouldnt get me to sniff at a humbucker. Sadly in this case a humbucker is the way to go.

Strats are a VERY versatile intsrument.
You can use them for any type of music. I agree w/ Niki on the humbucker idea.
EMG active humbuckers work quite well for Black Metal .81/85's possibly.
