I own a 86/87 62 Reissue Stratocaster with the name M. SMITH stamped in the neck pocket and the name Juan penciled in the neck pocket. The neck is dated 8/13/87 and the pots are dated 86. Does anybody have any info on these people. Thanks for any help out there.

boy do you have a real collectors item there pal. if you don't know what 80s '57 and '62RIs are fetching these days, take a look at this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/1983-Fender-Vintage ... 3efc350411

there's a '83

here's an '87, only it is a '57RI:

http://cgi.ebay.com/1987-Fender-Stratoc ... 4a9df04c75

the'll go anywhere between 2000 and 4000. mine was appraised at about 2200.

what color is it? pics would be great too.

regards,

Chandler

Thanks for the reply, it is sunburst. I have a few pictures of the body cavity and underside of the pickguard, lots of checking on the body that I can try and photograph to get the details for you to see. If you send me your email I can send the pictures I have, also a neck plate picture. I would post the pictures but I am new to these forums and I don't know how to reply with pictures so maybe you could post them for me. Again thanks for the reply and looking forward to sending you these pictures, Robert D.

one way you can post pics is to go to www.tinypic.com, upload the pictures, and then copy and paste the link for message boards.

Oh dear I wish I hadn't seen that. Mine was identical to it until I took paintstripper and a blow torch to it :( Still my best playing strat though. 62 Reissues are top balls guitars.

No, the necks on the reissues were never stamped with a size. Actually back then the '57 and the '62 used the same neck shape - per "The Stratocaster Chronicles" they arbitrarily chose the year "1957" for the maple-board Strat to evoke "classic images" like a '57 Chevy, and 1962 was chosen so they could use either slab boards or round lam boards. This neck shape was known as a "small shouldered C", was pretty thin, and was used on both the CBS/Fullerton era guitars (1982-1984) and the early FMIC-era guitars (starting in late 1985 and running into the 1990s). I'm not sure if the necks might have had a spec change prior to the line getting a total update in 1998 but it is possible. In 1998 Fender updated the USA reissues to the American Vintage series, and at that time they worked to make the necks more vintage accurate - the '57 got the V shape, and the '62 got a slightly thicker/rounder C shape (and they fixed the 12-fret dot spacing at that time).

Evidently David Gilmour is a big fan of these early USA reissue necks - when his tech rebuilt "The Black Strat" after recovering it from the Hard Rock Cafe in the mid-2000s the tech put on an AV '57 neck. I'm sure he figured that would work since Gilmour had been playing a bunch of circa 1983/84 '57 reissues (the candy apple red one with EMGs in particular) since before loaning out "The Black Strat". After playing "The Black Strat" for a while Gilmour decided to pull the neck off of one of his 1983/84 '57 Reissues (the vintage white one he used on the "About Face" tour) and put that on instead. It was that 1983/84 '57 Reissue neck that the CS copied for his Signature models. Per the CS website the specs he is using are:

.790" at the first fret, .870" at the 12th fret, and it appears to be a bit wider than standard vintage width at 1.675" inches (instead of 1.65" used on current AV guitars)
