Well well well who would have thought it. I've taken my customclassic strat. Removed the S1 and SCN pickups. Installed some AlnicoII's and left the wiring stock. No bridge tone control, no jumper wire, no midboosts, no blender pot, no no-load tone controls. I didnt even shield the cavitiy (no it doesnt buzz bad, its earthed excellently enough). Just a stock strat. What a liberating experience.

A big reminder of why I first fell for that singlecoil sound.

Dont worry, theres big plans for the hotrod and that s1 switch.

Adey.
I got a bareknuckles sultans set. I'm still very much in the honeymoon period, but these things are so inspiring. Honestly I used to think these were expensive. Yet I plucked up the courage to ring the company up and seek their advice. They questioned what kind of sound I wanted and made a recommendation. What I basicaly wanted was to go from that Marvin bridgepickup to knopfler on the middle and a decent amount of power at the neck. I got just what I wanted. I get very bored very quickly when thinking about pickups. The markets absolutely flooded to the point that after 5 minutes looking I give up. Pickup shopping is just a huge headache to me.

Would you believe that the middle pickup is same polarity and that I do hear a massive difference between it and reverse polarity. Your absolutely right theres nothing like a stock strat. Still theres a couple lying around waiting to be messed with.

Now I'm off to put a 25K carbon trace in that S1 switch and midboost the 57 hotrod, tonezone and all.

I had to google them...glad you like them...

"The Sultan's set of single coil pickups feature traditional vintage stagger Alnico II pole pieces hand bevelled to focus the power of each magnet under the strings. Calibrated to provide an even balance of power, each coil is individually scatterwound by hand with plain enamel wire and hooked up using cloth "push back" cable just like the originals.

Wax potted to guard against microphony, reverse-wound, reverse polarity middle pickup (hum cancelling when used with the bridge or neck pickup in position 2 or 4 of a 5 way switch) and guaranteed for life;

These Sultans are kings of supreme clean guitar sound.

Available with optional flat profile magnets for modern radius guitars, original stock polarity middle pickup and all sets come complete with covers.*

Wound, made and played the traditional way-by hand!

DC: 6.4k calibrated* Magnet: Alnico II hand bevelled vintage stagger"

I'm glad someone else in the know agrees with me on this.

Yea, I guess too many stock Strats lying around is way too much temptation to resist.

My 80's MIJ Fender Standard Strat has the stock pups and wiring in it. No plans on changing it at this point in time.

My 1986 MIJ Fender '68RI has stock pups and wiring in it, but I have plans on different wiring (think Robbie Robertson) for it.

Now Chet I remember you saying something about that in the past. I'm very intrigued by how that guitar is wired. The customshop one we were promised hasn't appeared has it.

What have you done with the ALLSTRAT and them concentric pots?

I need to go in and do some shielding of the pickguard on the Highway 1 that I used 3 on/off/on switches and 3 concentric pots. There is no shielding under the switches.

Niki is about to start a trend: people returning their Strat to stock!

Oh wait, I did that in the mid-'90s ...

Nah not at all O.O. I just think theres something really great about the stock wiring that gets missed out in favour of more modern appointments. I even tried the no load tone pot on the bridge and middle pickups. It didnt sound the same in possition 2 without any tone pot load on the middle pickup. I may try it on the neck and bridge pickups and leave the other tone pot for the middle pickup. See if that gives the best of both worlds or not.

Seems to me the way my Powerhouse is wired up that my Volume is a master control and my Tone is also a master control. They control all three pups regardless of which single or pair I have selected.

All the last Tone does is activate and control the 12db boost. 8)
