My favourite ones are the 57/62s.They come stock in the vintage reissues and I really love their nasty vintage flavoured mid range presence. There is a cool clip on youtube where a guy compares these in his stock 1957 reissue to custom 54s,fat 50s and custom 69s.They all sounded really great but of all those,I prefered the 57/62s.They seemed to have the most soulful tone to my taste.Check out youtube by typing in 'fat 50s pickup' and it will lead you to that clip.

No current Fender made pickup will give you that true 50s tone. Fender winds their pups with computer controlled machines now days and through the 50s, 60s up into the 70s fender hand wound their pups. The closest you will get to that tone now is to either shell out a ton of cash on real 50s pups or look into new hand wound pups. There are many small time guys that are recreating 50s and 60s pups by using the same materials and techniques that Fender used to hand wind pickups back in the 50s and 60s. The technique is called scatter wound. This happens by hand winding the pickups so that the wire overlaps and and the tension varies. When pickups are mass produced with computer machine winding the wire doesn't overlap and the tension stays the same. It is the overlapping and varying tension that gives you that 50s tone. You can find many of these hand wound pickups sets on ebay for $150 up to $300 per set.

I played through a Bare Knuckles Mothers Milk set the other night. Well I was impressed enough to chance the sultans set, based on what I heard. Very nice sweet sounding set of pickups that mothers milk lot, based on Fruciante's 54 strat I believe. The quality of em impressed me enough to trust the makers description of a different set. It takes some work to get me to part with cash these days. Next month I wont have bought a new guitar for a whole year.

Take a look at Klein Pickups. I have a set of his pickups and couldn't be happier. He's got a wide variety of pickups available and they are quality. He has reasonable pricing and handwinds everything.

Just about any low output Alnico single coil will get you that vintage sound.

Just got my Bare Knuckles Sultans set installed in my strat.

What a stunning (I mean I was absolutely floored) sound. It took me all my resolve just to stop strumming the open strings and fret a note.

Low output, glassy, clear, percussive, sharp yet full sounding.

I'm sold on them, the day they make single coil sized buckers, I'll be fitting one of them in my 57 Hotrod.

That's very true, I had a guy here locally make a zebra coil Un-bucker (uneven balance humbucker for coil tapping). The pickup, push/pull pot, and installation came to $65. This is the best blues pickup I've ever heard. Handwound to be hot, 9k in the live coil, 6k in the dead coil. Overwound and sweet to the ears. You can't buy a name brand humbucker of decent quality at that price, let alone include the pot and installation. I thought about having him create some single coils for my strat, but I like my custom shop Texas Specials...for now.... :P
