I think ANY Fender for $300 in that condition is a good deal.

It is kinda polka dotty though ain't it?

:)

Thanks guys!

I was worried that I over paid...but I figured it was a Buddy Guy so I might have lucked out.

I can't tell you how it sounds simply because I still suck. I'm learning my cords, rhythm strumming and so on; but give me a year...I'll be on tour with John Mayer (as long as he doesn't drop any more "N" bombs).

We made the mistake of getting a cheap photographer, and it is still (20 years later) a sore subject with my wife. It sounds like you are doing the right thing with the pictures. As far as the open bar, with only 70 people you shouldn't get hurt to bad. I realize when there is an open bar Pabst drinkers are downing Crown Royal, but hey you already have a great guitar so go for it.

No matter how you put it, its a STEAL! I've heard of the cracking, usually just a finish issue. But it wouldn't hurt to have a pro look at it. That is a beautiful guitar. The newer Buddy Guy Strat's colors are reversed. I like your verison better.

Now there's a rare bird  . That's the guitar I've dubbed 'The Dalmation'. I owned a white on black which I swapped the pickups out for DiMarzio Heavy Blues. That got rid of the MIM's hum and gave it some sock. I also preferred the black on white. I wonder at DB's observation that the newer finish has the colors reversed. Having seen a photo of Buddy with one some two years back, I inquired of Fender as to whether or not they were available. I was told "No!" :? Caught me by surprise in that I've actually seen a pic of a white on red here in the Forums long past. I'd sure like to learn that The Dalmation is available.

I swapped my BG guitar out in trade for another purchase. Were I you, I would make this a keeper. $300 is a great price, but the rarity of the finish may change that for you in the future. Use it well, and protect it.

Doc

The Dalmatian and the red and white were limited numbers. His guitar is even more of a steal than people think, because you can't get that finish anymore.

I think the first Buddy sig's were red with white dots. Really cool.

Did they keep that issuance a closely guarded secret. I've never ever seen one on a wall anywhere. Guitar Center certainly would have had them. Nor has Fender ever shown those finishes in their catalogs. :?

i haven't seen any actual numbers. i guess i should have said they stopped making those colours. I seem to remember that the red and whit (middle in the above picture,) was really limited.

Here's a neat excerpt from an interview rick landers of Modern Guitars magazine did with Buddy in '05:

Quote:
Rick: The Polka Dot Hall of Fame honors you for your guitars. How do you explain them in your acceptance speech?

Buddy: You know, I'm actually the oldest boy of five children, three boys and two girls. I was the oldest and and I was the first child to leave the family. My mom always worried about if we were okay. I didn't want her to feel like I was going to be stranded, but I was, but I wasn't going to let her know.

And I told her, to perk her up and feel better, that I was going to Chicago and I'm going to get a job and I'm going to buy her a polka dot Cadillac and come back and make her laugh and smile -- a big old brand new polka dot Cadillac to let her know how well I'd done.

I forgot about that after she passed and gone and didn't think about a polka dot guitar 'til some years later. She died in 1968 and I think the polka dot guitar is about 10 or 12 years old now, maybe a little older.

Rick: The polka dots honor your mom.

Buddy: Yes. See, I never really wanted a polka dot Cadillac, I made that up for her. Anyway, I made that up for her and I winded up with a polka dot guitar.

Here's the 'skinny' on that as far as my aged memory can recall. I've already commented elsewhere that the first issuance was a blond finish with tortoise shell pickguard, white pups w/pole pieces, and a 12db midboost. This guitar, I believe to have eventually evolved into the Powerhouse, now discontinued. Then he moved into Clapton territory with that circuit. The two Signature Artist series guitars continued, the two-tone SB being a nod to his first Strat which we see being played in the vintage video footage posted above. When he conceived the Polka Dot, it carried Lace Sensors w/black covers. The project to offer the white on black as an Artist Series guitar was approved by him on the condition that it was set at price point which a significant portion of his audience could meet. Hence, it was done as an MIM. Careful observation will reveal that there is a recognizable difference between the pattern on Buddy's stage guitar, and the production models. I obtained mine in early days of initial production and, at that time, there was no mention of any other finishes, nor have I ever seen any public announcement of such. I really would have enjoyed having a 'Dalmation' in my collection.
