Well....the public and the press hound celebrity/musicians to find out what's on their minds. And John complied....and told them what they wanted. So what's the problem here?

If the public wants to know why he likes to follow a Cmaj7th with an Am, that's a legit question to ask. Why anyone thinks they're going to get anything of value from a celebrity is waaaaay beyond me. Just because someone's good at one thing, don't expect they're going to be universally wise or even housebroken.

I say way to go John for laying it all out there. But keep your apologies to yourself.

You folks are funny.

I don't know much about rock/blue/guitar playing...but to be honest, I've become a huge fan of John Mayer over the past year.

Well...to be honest, he's the reason I started playing the guitar about 2-3 months ago. I think he's a great player, singer and songwriter. If I can play anywhere as good he can, I'll be happy. I'm pretty sure he's no where near the greatest player of all time and so on...but as I mentioned...I love the way he plays.

As for the N bomb he dropped...it was indeed ignorant. But to be honest...my thoughts on the comment aren't nearly as bad as most of the thoughts I've read in this thread.

I personally feel as though the word is thrown up in the air way too often and depending on who said it...determines the punishment. It's so much of a double standard in today's world. I'm personally tired of talking about race and who's allowed to say way...it's quite boring and somewhat overkill.

I'm quite certain Playboy didn't "hound" Mayer - they simply asked for an interview and he agreed. Remember, it benefits him (or not in this case), just as much as it benefits the magazine. He didn't do the interview out of the kindness of his heart or simply because they asked - celebrities need the press! Of course, when you have a meltdown and self-implode in a public venue, that's obviously not too beneficial. (although, I'm sure Playboy is licking their chops over this - "controversy" sells magazines in a big way.)

What's the hardest job in the world? PR manager for John Mayer.

Even though I despise the guy, I'm actually beginning to feel sorry for him. It's obvious he has deep emotional issues which is probably based on severe insecurity. That's why he's always trying to "prove" to the world how great he is by saying it's so. Trying to come across as "witty" in a high profile interview is perfectly normal - spouting stupid crap he did to achieve it, isn't.

I think the reason JM is such a polarizing topic is because he has the potential to be one of the greats - but his actions say otherwise. People don't like arrogance and even the most loyal fans will drop you in an instant once they realize you're a jerk.

John Mayer will be his own undoing.

This interview sheds some light on just how strange the man really is.
Even setting aside the racial quotes, which were rediculous statements for him to make, the entire interview demonstrates that the left side of his brain has the logic switch turned off.

Zappa I know and sympathise with how you feel. I dont like Mayer's music one bit but I fully understand your pain. There's a string of bands/performers I like that I'm utterly embarrassed by, because of their offstage actions.

Hands up who doesnt like the gary glitter track 'Leader of the pack'. If the guy wasnt some animal degenerate that track would still chart highly if released now. I'm not equating Mayer to glitter, simply using glitter as an example of a great recording/live artist in his day whose recent actions exclude him from humanity. You could use Jackson as another example. An utterly macabre weirdo &%^£witt of a person, but he wrote or sang (excellently) atleast one track everyone likes.
Like I said previously Mayer should let his PR people write his interview answers.

it takes balls to make statements like he did, but it takes even more balls to publically address them, and give an emotional, heartfelt apology. f$%k all you people who still are hating on this. it's done and over with.

Things are seldom what they seem, and it can often be difficult to be confronted by iconoclasts suggesting that you may be worshipping a tin god. You need to begin to cultivate an open mind. He's NOT a god. He's a young man, talented, of course, but arguably possessed of many issues, many of which he is not handling well. His so-called unexpurgated interview in "Rolling Stone'' has made that quite clear to me.

Your response is inappropriate, nor does he, in any manner shape of form, deserve to be supported in a fashion which will tend to demean yourself in the eyes of others. You are certainly young enough to be my son, and were it so, I would counsel you as such.

Doc

I agree...well said, zzdoc. Chanman's response was rude and inappropriate. I am a fan of John Mayer's music. I'm more than willing to give him another chance and I am and African-American female. Everyone makes mistakes. But anymore nonsense from him and I'm done. I won't blindly support him; there are plenty of guitarists (past and present) that I can support and learn from.

I was considering getting his signature strat, but I'll definitely pass...think I'll get a Robert Cray instead.

As a black man I was not offended by his words, as I get what notion he was trying to get at, he just could have chosen his word usage much better. I have read his comments over the years, and have picked up on his odd sense of humor, and I know he isn't always serious, especially in interviews. I think what happened here was a case of him trying too hard to be wiity, intellectual, funny, and all of his "jokes" going over the heads of many people. Once the rest of the media got a hold of his comments, they were thrown out of context and he was made out to be an evil man. I found that most people who were quick to rag on him hadn't even read the whole article. If he had articulated better I think this is what he basically said.

" I can't have a hood pass, because I have never been suffered to endure the hardships of the African American community. Until the day comes that I have been called a N-word, I can't truly understand and belong."

" I don't really date black women, I prefer white women."

Thats essentially what he said, but because of his use of terms it came out as racially charged. However he did say some other things in that article that I don't agree with, and I think that he should think before he opens his mouth. Then again he has a song that is titled, " My stupid Mouth."

I was going to post a comment about this thread, but decided it wasn't worth it. JM is not worth it either.
