John Lennon's comments about "being more popular than Jesus"were misconstrued from the start. He explained in an interview many years later that he made the statement more as a commentary on the state of the world at the time. What he had meant by it was that in this day and age religion had taken such a back seat that a rock band-he just used the Beatles as an example-would most likely attract more people than Jesus would, probably not the best example but then sadly possibly true.

you are spot on with that guitslinger......I am the LEAST religious person I know but as far as John Lennon's comments go he was right then and would be right today.......I would love to see how many followers Jesus would have on Twitter today......battling for #1 with JM and Ashton Kutcher.....

I am not a JM fan in any form, but dang.....the guy is a rock-star. Last I heard rock-stars are not known for their tact and sensitivity. I say stupid things all the time. If I was a famous rocker, I would probably still say stupid things. Maybe not quite as dumb as JM's playboy interview (I just read it for the articles :D :!: ), but I without doubt, I would be on the record for some ill-advised comments.
It doesn’t change a thing. JM lovers will still love him, and haters will still hate. Meanwhile I applaud his success as a business man, but not as a musician. I am much more worried about what this world is coming to if a doped up pop star can’t even talk out of his %$$ without everyone getting their shorts in a knot.
My friend your a legend!!! That's what I've been saying all day on this thread

Just a question that bears asking....if no one like this thread why is everyone coming back to the thread going "is this thing still here?" or "That's what I've been saying all day on this thread" jnastyNE and therise123..this is NOT directed to you or anyone in particular....I just thought it was funny and worth mentioning! and jnastyNE I agree with that point but stupid comments(see George Bush) and career suicide (see Tiger Woods) is two different things...is it not? what is your definition of doped up musician...Kurt Cobain or Ray Charles...or Rick James Or Amy Winehouse.....different but the same......

My comment about "this thing still going?" was because I assumed that this thread would be locked by the time I got around to checking it again, not because I don’t enjoy it or find it entertaining. Tiger is far from career suicide, my friend. Woods is famous because he is a world class golfer. Yes, the guy has been around much more than most married men, but bottom line, he plays stick better than almost anyone, and that’s why people like him. Just like JM, the fans will still cheer, and the haters will still hate when he gets back to the game. The sponsors will start calling when he starts winning majors again.
Since when did we start looking at pro athletes and rock stars as pillars of moral fortitude? I want to see guitar player X or pro athlete Y put on a killer show for the $$ I dropped on a ticket, but I care less about what he does when he walks off the stage. Like the Stratocaster player for his music or hate him for it. Don’t bash a rock-star because of a crappy interview in a porno mag.
PS- I don’t care if JM puffs a little sticky. If I boycotted every artist that dabbled in recreational substances, I would have 4 songs on my iPod.

He shouldn't have given a crappy interview in a porno mag than. Like it or not, he's a public figure and public figures will always be judged for their action both on, and off, the stage. It's the price they pay.

I don't think Playboy is considered a porno mag. It's actually pretty respected. Hustler, Swank etc, pretty much porno mags.

Most of his interviews are like that anyway. It doesn't matter what publication it is.
This is pretty funny and shows his real mentality.

The recent John Mayer interview in Guitar World (IIRC) wasn't like those others. It stuck to guitar matters, but that could have been good editing on the part of the article's writer (thankfully).

John should stick to talking about his music,at least thats the one thing he can somewhat hold a coherent conversation and have at least some insight into.As far as race, romance or everyday life its obvious he doesnt have a clue.

I'm in the other half...

Seriously though, I don't think it's fair to put the "blame" for John Mayer on teen aged girls. Not all teen aged girls like slow sappy pop music (like myself). He has plenty of male fans too, who like his pop music.

And it's nobody's fault but his for acting stupid. :P
