IMO, Rude and arrogant is one thing, but making racist statements in popular magazine interviews is just stupid. He seems like he's trying to mess up his career like Pee Wee Herman.

Budglo, Dave Mathews would be a good choice, it's just about the same music. Seems like Mayer got his chick music act from him.

You know what would be funny, John Mayer and Jonny Lange forming a bad and calling it "The New Faces".

I wasn't comparing them! Not in a musical sense anyway. You can't deny that they've both made comments that deep down I think they wish they hadn't

Some people are confused about the First Amendment in the United States. It is far from complete protection from the consequences of speech. In most cases you cannot be prosecuted in a court of law for your speech. Even then there are limits, the most famous example of which is that you may not yell "Fire!" in a crowded theatre. "Fighting Words" are also not protected. And, increasingly, "hate speech," whatever that is, is not protected.

But outside of criminal courts you may very well be subject to a wide variety of legal responses as a result of your speech. If John Mayer's statements ruin his career, the First Amendment is not offended. If you have a public argument with your boss, you may not be protected (but maybe you will be). If your T-shirt violates the school dress code, you may not be protected (although once again maybe you are). But even when things like this do get to a court, it's a civil matter, not criminal.

So the First Amendment protects you from criminal prosecution.

Yeah mate I agree with you, the bloke should be allowed his say.

I for one despise all law, I'm a complete nihilist. The sad fact is that laws exist for our protection and control. Otherwise Mayer would be far more likely to receive a more physical backlash. The previous comment I made was more highlighting how freedom of speech isn't a truth of the modern world. Than in some way equating Mayer to the war.

Mayer should be glad its just a bunch of nobody's on the internet turning this one over. I'm trying to be objective and all I can think is that if this happened before the rise of the internet. It would have ended his career outright. Can you imagine what The Mirror would have made of the statement in say 1988?

Yeah man haha good point. It's safe to say times have changed a bit lol

I think bringing Lennon in as an example is a good one. Lennon was usually a bit acidic, witty and jaded in his interviews. Mayer seems to have tried to take on the same attributes but isnt as capable of making himself understood. It comes of as obnoxious, snotty incoherence. Hence my previous comments of inane ramblings and should let his PR people write his answers.

Ha Supro, I always thought they sounded alike.I wonder if John Mayer is "waiting for the world to change"?

Is this thing still going?
I am not a JM fan in any form, but dang.....the guy is a rock-star. Last I heard rock-stars are not known for their tact and sensitivity. I say stupid things all the time. If I was a famous rocker, I would probably still say stupid things. Maybe not quite as dumb as JM's playboy interview (I just read it for the articles :D :!: ), but I without doubt, I would be on the record for some ill-advised comments.
It doesn’t change a thing. JM lovers will still love him, and haters will still hate. Meanwhile I applaud his success as a business man, but not as a musician. I am much more worried about what this world is coming to if a doped up pop star can’t even talk out of his %$$ without everyone getting their shorts in a knot.

Just a question that bears asking....if no one like this thread why is everyone coming back to the thread going "is this thing still here?" or "That's what I've been saying all day on this thread" jnastyNE and therise123..this is NOT directed to you or anyone in particular....I just thought it was funny and worth mentioning! and jnastyNE I agree with that point but stupid comments(see George Bush) and career suicide (see Tiger Woods) is two different things...is it not? what is your definition of doped up musician...Kurt Cobain or Ray Charles...or Rick James Or Amy Winehouse.....different but the same......

John Lennon's comments about "being more popular than Jesus"were misconstrued from the start. He explained in an interview many years later that he made the statement more as a commentary on the state of the world at the time. What he had meant by it was that in this day and age religion had taken such a back seat that a rock band-he just used the Beatles as an example-would most likely attract more people than Jesus would, probably not the best example but then sadly possibly true.
