They do, and isn't it amazing? I guess if nothing else, the man has developed some loyal fans.
But they annoy me. You can pop up on the forum and say you don't particularly care for any other artist, and you may get some mild expression of disagreement. But say you don't like this twit John Mayer and LOOK OUT - here comes the army.

Hey, Mayer fanboys - it's OK for someone else to not have the undying admiration (which I admittedly don't understand) you have for him. We don't all have to like the same people, music, or styles.
And when he steps on it like he did in not one, but two recent interviews - he deserves to be publicly berated.
But you all take it like a personal insult - which it is not.

Thanks Brad. There is nothing wrong with a heated debate, but kids read these posts and some things are just unacceptable. You can agree with someone without getting vulgar or personal.

I think the reason these things end in such a manner is because of JM's fanbase and the age difference between a lot of his fanbase and a lot of his critics. The guy attracts teenyboppers, i.e teenagers. A lot of his critics are nearer the parental age of the fans. Lets face it most teenagers will strop over the weather. Having someone of their parents age criticize their new crush is just asking for a hormone explosion isnt it.

The other thing is that mayer is obviously a talented guy (though I find his composition and playing incredibly dull) who's had some success. Yet he acts like some halfwit Ricky Lake show guest.

It is deleted now but I think He was saying something along the lines...
People should look at themselves before they judge others achievements and charity. Even if you pretend to be someone else you are still no better.

I like John Mayer as an artist. Am I annoying to you? Would you dismiss me because I liked his music?

Why do you feel the need to go and tell people who you don't like?
You do have the right to dislike whomever you want and the right (with reason) to say whatever you like. What what makes you want to tell people who you dislike instead?

The point where I'm coming from is I dislike lots of guitarists but I never feel the urge to share my non love of them. Why be negative especially if someone else enjoys them?

Noone deserves to be publicly berated. Look at Britney Spears for instance. Not that I listen to her music but do you think its fair people can just say whatever they like to her because she might have done or said some things that people didn't agree with?

Mayer and a few others are guilty of not knowing the difference between a noun and an adjective. The two are NEVER the same. Decent guitarist, lousy wordsmith!

People are entitled to their opinions. It's a forum. There are many opinions here. If a fan wants to read nothing but great things about a performer, go to their official site and read and write glowing things.

When you're in the lime light, and your fans are making a lucrative career for you, you need to pay attention to what you say publicly. When you make stupid public statements, you should be prepared to be publicly berated. Mayer and Spears have a lot in common. No common sense.

Yes some of Mayer's fans are annoying.

Let me help you understand. I am 43 years old. Growing up for me the word N*&&$% usually preceeded an asskicking, an exclusion or a degradation.

You see to certain people, a black person is not judged by their personailty, attributes or qualities. They are simply a N*&&%*. That means they are the lowest form of human speciman on the face of the earth. I can think of no other word or term that can diminish a human to less than an animal other than that word. My race is not N*&&^%. I dont like it when it is used by blacks towards blacks.
When a person uses that word they are expressing what they feel your worth is to human kind.
Sticks and stones???? BS that word stings like hell. All your self worth demolished by a phrase. A phrase that is understood and used around the world.

Full disclosure time: I grew up in a small Texas town that was infamously known for racial prejudice. My wife is of Mexican descent, my best friend/drummer is of Jewish descent, my bass player is Afro-American (or as he says, "black", lol). I have family and friends from every background (racially, ethnically, economically, regionally). I really don't give a crap about what race a person is or where they're from, I just worry about what kind of person they are, according to their actions...and their words are a part of their actions.

I like a lot of Mayer's music (he's not my favorite, nor is he the best or worst guitarist I've ever seen). I think he's got quite a bit of musical talent, and his duality as a pop and blues/rock artist is refreshing in a world where many artists can't do one thing well.

...but I'm taken aback by his racial comments. I'm not politically correct, and I'm not a Northeastern liberal (I'm pretty much apolitical, and dislike all politicians, liberal, conservative or otherwise). Nor am I a prude.

But there's really no excuse to use the N-word in this day and age, especially from a guy his age (an eighty-year-old man from an all-white area isn't "excused" or "ok" in my mind if he uses a racial slur, but I also understand he might be ignorant or fearful of other races). I don't know the full context of the statement made (I haven't read the interview), but, judging from other soundbites regarding sex, etc., it sounds like Mayer's going for shock value. Youthful ignorance is no excuse, either--he's not ten years old...he knows better!

I'm not easily offended, and I usually want to know the context or reasoning behind people's comments, but this is just a guy shooting off his mouth, and saying something stupid. Mayer, if he sticks to his decision about not using that word or being interviewed ever again, might weather this storm; but he is going to learn that his words can--and will--damage his standing as an artist.

Words do matter--if you don't think so, walk up to a new mother and tell her that her baby is ugly. If you survive, you'll know that freedom of speech is limited, not by government, but by the hearer of that speech.

I have to agree 100% with Screamin' Armadillo here. My Dad's white, born in West Texas raised in Houston, and he married my Mom who is of Mexican and Lebanese decent. In my family my brother and I were raised to treat people with respect and to judge a person by the kind of person they are and not by their race. My parents have friends of all races, I have friends of all races, and I really don't even think about it. It truly never crosses my mind what race a friend is until I hear something and think "hey, so-and-so's not like that" or "that was bad, I'm glad so-and-so didn't hear it". It embarrasses me when I hear a grandparent mumble something under their breath, even when no one else can hear it.

I'm assuming that John Mayer has friends who are black. So why in the world would he say something worse than anything I've ever heard any of my grandparents say in front of everyone including his friends? I hope it's nothing more than a publicity stunt, but what a classless thing to do. I hope he's embarrassed.
