Mayer is the latest in a long line of pop stars who has forgotten how he got where he is, and now thinks that it's all about him. Everything he has is based ultimately in his ability to play the electric guitar. That's what made him well-known. But that's not good enough for him. Now he needs a pop existence that centers on him, and not his skills.

Contrast how he plays with the things he has been saying and doing lately. What better proof do you need that superb playing doesn't provide a glimpse into the soul of the player? Mayer's soul has some issues, but his playing is very good.

Rather, the ability to play well is a result of a long period of learning and stringing together a series of riffs, techniques, and skills. Talent is necessary, but so is the ability to copy what has been done by others. We call this "influence."

Mayer learned well from his predecessors, but he has added little that is original. Excellent technical player.

Well crafted observations. Mayer certainly doesn't need a cadre of grass roots dime store public relations specialists pleading his case either. I wouldn't put it past him for this to be all part of an on-going the plan to maintain himself in the public eye as an object of controversy. That kind of interest is what sells product. He's been very clear about being in total control of his destiny, and likely recognizes well how gossip is the engine which turns the gears and wheels of the entertainment machine. If this is not the case, then only plain stupidity rules as already observed.

With respect to the concerns of Troublecall and Budglo, by this time we ought to be immune to less than elegant use of language, nor has this been, or going to be the first or last time we'll see it. Individuals are who they are and, in the end, simply reflect upon themselves. We continue to enjoy the fact that they remain in the minority, an that the majority of respondents continue to make valuable and constructive contributions.

Yo!!....Firedup......

Your racial phenotype does not give you ownership over the use or abuse of the time worn scatalogical reference to Negroes. Consensus is that the use of the word is considered to be objectionable and strongly discouraged, not withstanding the fact that it can be heard uttered on a daily basis by the cogniscenti of the
boyz in the hood, allegedly made more palatable and proper by the substitution of 'az' for 'er', which it is definitely not, to the ears of those who are not, by definition or any other categorization, considered to be brothers and sisters.

If we accepted your thesis then the next presidential election campaign could rightly be conducted by the opposition with the rallying cry "Let's get the n----r out of the White House".

Fortunately those of us who stand on a high moral ground with respect to the use of that word will see to it that we don't go there. Whereas those of your ilk will continue to be an ever present and ongoing reminder of how much progress there is yet to be made, and where the barriers continue to be found.

Ya'll having been hoisted by your own petardz,so to speak. [/quote]

new fave picture.

someone just lock this. it isn't worth arguing over. I will note that on tryjm.com, on the page with the interview, the author of the interview is on mayer's side. just thought I'd throw that out.

but seriously, Brad, close this.

Brad, this has gone on long enough and Firedup, watch the mouth, we do have some fairly young people on here too. Most Black men I know have a lot more class than what you display here.

Full disclosure time: I grew up in a small Texas town that was infamously known for racial prejudice. My wife is of Mexican descent, my best friend/drummer is of Jewish descent, my bass player is Afro-American (or as he says, "black", lol). I have family and friends from every background (racially, ethnically, economically, regionally). I really don't give a crap about what race a person is or where they're from, I just worry about what kind of person they are, according to their actions...and their words are a part of their actions.

I like a lot of Mayer's music (he's not my favorite, nor is he the best or worst guitarist I've ever seen). I think he's got quite a bit of musical talent, and his duality as a pop and blues/rock artist is refreshing in a world where many artists can't do one thing well.

...but I'm taken aback by his racial comments. I'm not politically correct, and I'm not a Northeastern liberal (I'm pretty much apolitical, and dislike all politicians, liberal, conservative or otherwise). Nor am I a prude.

But there's really no excuse to use the N-word in this day and age, especially from a guy his age (an eighty-year-old man from an all-white area isn't "excused" or "ok" in my mind if he uses a racial slur, but I also understand he might be ignorant or fearful of other races). I don't know the full context of the statement made (I haven't read the interview), but, judging from other soundbites regarding sex, etc., it sounds like Mayer's going for shock value. Youthful ignorance is no excuse, either--he's not ten years old...he knows better!

I'm not easily offended, and I usually want to know the context or reasoning behind people's comments, but this is just a guy shooting off his mouth, and saying something stupid. Mayer, if he sticks to his decision about not using that word or being interviewed ever again, might weather this storm; but he is going to learn that his words can--and will--damage his standing as an artist.

Words do matter--if you don't think so, walk up to a new mother and tell her that her baby is ugly. If you survive, you'll know that freedom of speech is limited, not by government, but by the hearer of that speech.

Thanks Brad. I'm usually pretty thick skinned but that guy irked me. I've been around the block a few times and have played professionally with musicians of every race and background. I even played in a Soul band as well as dozens of Blues bands and was the only Caucasian and was never treated with anything but respect.

Thing is, these Mayer threads ALWAYS wind up like this.
