It's a 6" long, 5/16" wide single-cut smooth file that's perfect for the job. It leaves a polished surface that requires little to no final polishing necessary.

Well, how about that for great minds, etc? I use the exact same file for finishing before polishing!

It's odd but a guy I work with who is an experienced player of 40 years or more bought a new Tele this winter and had fret sprout and didn't know what it was....this in Tennessee where we usually have enough humidity to boil shrimp in...but this winter has been colder and drier than many, many years before.

I noticed that StewMac, in their catalog have a "fret-finishing" file which is a stick about the size of a pencil which has on it small circular strips of various grade sandpaper. I put in to buy one, less than $10. I'll give that a go.

Well I got my Fret Dressing Stick today in the mail.
Cool little tool...4 different grit of sandpaper.
I did a few frets already and I'm pleased with the results. I won't take them down all the way yet. But I took off a good amount and the difference is noticeable. Worth the $10...I did buy some other things too for a project guitar.

Well I'm going to try and post some pics of the tool and what it did for my fret-ends.

Hopefully, this will work. I wish I had taken "before" shots.

This is the tool. About the size of a pencil. It comes with 4 different grade sandpapers. From 240 (coarse) to 600 (fine). The tool when pushed in on both ends, collapses so that you can place the loop of sandpaper on it. When you let go, the tool takes the slack out of the paper making it stiff. You can easily move the sandpaper with your finger, as you go.

Here's a close-up after I used all 4 grades of sandpaper.
It really smoothed down the ends and the neck feels very nice now.

The trick is to take your time with each grade of paper. It took just under an hour to do both sides of the neck.

Great tool for $10.
