Hi all, in an earlier thread regarding my 97' American Strat, i had asked what the little "clicking into place" that occurs when i dial my bridge tone pot all the way to ten means. Most posts agreed that i do indeed have a delta tone model, as the "clicking in" at number ten is how that works, as opposed to around number 5 on the dial. I get all that, but just what is the clicking into place cause please? Again, many thanks to all who help here! :D

When the volume knob is rotated all the way and into the detent - the tone circuit is bypassed. The intent was to create a system that would be similar to the bridge pickup being wired straight to the jack.

I really appreciate your help, but are you still referring to my tone knob clicking int it's detent on my strat, even though you typed volume knob? And would being wired directly to the jack mean something like full range tone rather than more or less treble? i just have a problem "getting it" here, as a novice to strats in general. thanks!

He typo'ed, if you sub in Tone for volume, he is right on the money.

From the 1999 issue of Fender Frontline:

The DeltaTone (TM) System:
= Hot Bridge pickup:
- for blistering leads

= No-Load Tone Control:
- affects bridge and middle pickups on the Strat
- affects both pickups on the Tele
- when on 10 it's completely out of the circuit allowing all frequencies to pass through. Below 10 it functions as a normal 250KΩ tone control.

This news to me as I always thought it was wired to the volume pot. I do not own a DeltaTone equipped guitar.

OK... following up... do all Delta-Tone Fender guitars have active electronics... i.e. the 12db mid-boost from the Tone 2 control? Or is that a combination that was available only in the Powerhouse and other Strats like the BG signature? I'm learning new stuff every day here and loving it. 8)

Delta tone is a passive control.

I was just curious as my MIM has both. Didn't know if they came like that or it was two separate systems. 8)

When I put the DeltaTone circuit in mine. I was aiming to have complete control over tone. Of the shelf MIM Standards only have Neck and Middle Tone controls.

I ordered the No-Load Pot and wired everything to Am. Std Specs so that I could have Tone control of the Bridge pup. But the beauty of the DeltaTone is the ability to bypass the tone circuit, just like before I made the Mod.

But, mine doesn't click. I could have installed a bunk pot, but the tone control does work. Can anyone else with an Am Std chime in and tell me "It is supposed to click", "you got a junk pot".

I would imagine you need to order a pot with the detente. A normal pot won't have it. I don't know if a normal pot will actually bypass the tone control or not.

I have a Strat with the TBX control, which I personally prefer to the later deltatone thingie, it has a detente halfway through the sweep of the pot. so a standard pot wouldn't be the same.

Thanks TwelveBar,

The Pot I ordered and installed was

Fender Model#990832000 Control Pot 250K "No Load"

which to my understanding is the same as

Fender Part#50666000 250k "No Load"

Why they assign different numbers (model# and part#) is beyond me, confusing to say the least. I suppose the part# is the internal numbering system for the assembly of guitars, and the model# is for resale parts.

As I said, I got the part number and wiring diagram from the current model American Standard with the DeltaTone. So my "No Load" pot is the same as found in the Am Std Strats. But again, it doesn't click. It rolls smoothly all the way up with a little more resistance near the top, but no click.

The click might be the difference between the two parts?

There is a detent shaped into the can of that pot. This detent interplays with the internal moving part of your pot and merely lets you know you have dialed the pot all the way up to '10' by clicking it in, so to speak.
