It seems to me the main requirement for getting a signature guitar is current record sales. It's got nothing to do with the signee's ability to play the thing.

It's cheap advertizing, it costs what? Say 200 guitars a year that no manufacturer would miss when their turning out 100,000+ in one factory.

in short, i remember him in an interview in 70s or something that he stated that he hated the twangy sound of fenders but they were harder to break but easy to repair he said thats why he would use fenders on the last songs cos it was getting too expensive to smash the ricks and gibson sg's also they were not repairable after he smashed them in most cases.

There are occasions where I read a post and just have to scratch my head. Pete should of had a signature series Fender a long time ago. He may not be a big lead player but he sure as hell is a great guitarist. Jay also brought up a good point about writing, I am sure there are a lot of guys who figure the Who's material is a collaboration between guitarist and vocalist like just about all the great bands have-Wrong. Townshend writes both words and music and Roger just sings.

I totally like the idea of a Strat with a Piezo and as someone said already said just for that reason the guitar should be made ,but it is deeper than that. Pete Townshend is a legend plain and simple.

Hi Davededude,Pete Townshend may not have been the best technical lead guitarist but when he did a lead break even the 2 note hammer-on in I Can See For Miles it was filled with agressive passion that very few could pull off.Neil Young isn't technically great either but his leads although simple are gut wrenchingly raw.Pete's acoustic playing is also right up there,as you said,I loved his acoustic work in Magic Bus especially and Mary Ann With The Shakey Hand.

If Tom Delonge is worthy then by far Pete Townsend is.There are a few people who arent revolutionary ,but gets a signature strat.John Mayer hasnt done anything revolutionary on a strat, but still gets one.

Not sure if he's worthy? Please! He's influenced so many guitarists and has been around since 1964. Also, Tom DeLonge and John Mayer get signature Strats, but not him? Just what is wrong with this picture? Those 2 idiots I just mentioned, haven't even influenced or contributed half as much to music as Pete Townsend has. Tom DeLonge is more or less under "Where are they now", while John Mayer is more famous for who he's dating rather than his music.

Nobody mentioned that Billy Corgan & Jim Root have signature Strats, and you could just as easily argue they haven't contributed that much. Me thinks Fender makes them b/c they think people will buy them solely based on the name. Maybe Fender marketing has run the numbers & figured a Pete Townsend Strat won't be profitable. Myself, I'm looking forward to the Fender Bryan Adams signature Strat - it has tone that cuts like a knife. I'll be here all week, everybody.

There should be a Jimi Henderix signature, even if he´s dead

You know, I have wondered why Bryan and Keith Scott never appear on the Fender website artists section despite their prolific high profile use of strats since the 'Reckless' album....

There have been several tribute models, but again, nothing special about his strats. Bear in mind he used a vast number of strats and only stock contemporary CBS ones at that, in other words no one guitar is associated with him (maybe the woodstock strat - but there has already been a tribute model of this), and he didn't play anything particularly collectible in by vintage standards. Essentially, all you'd need to do is get a leftie highway one with a maple board and flip it over and flip the nut. There were the voodoo strats a few years back which were an affordable attempt at a right handed strat with the bridge pickup angled the other way as well...

Yep, I remember back in late 70´s a Jimi Hendrix strat, but that´s long time ago. Well as u say it could be a white leftie highway one with maple neck and the upside trem, and maybe some chi chi noisless pickuos. I do think those characteristics are pretty specific and desirable, and it sure would sell, and it would be a sought after guitar you bet. Even a Buddy Holly sunburst reissue could be nice too.
Sometimes Fender has some artists (dead or alive) in front of their noses (Keith Richards, Bryan Adams) that deserve a signature strat.

Townsend definitely deserves his own signature model; he may not be a shredder or a virtuoso, but the man has rhythm chops like no other; and he created (and still creates--people just don't give his recent stuff a chance) some of the most memorable riffs in rock & roll...

My Generation
Magic Bus
Tommy (the whole album!)
Baba O'Reilly
Who Are You
Behind Blue Eyes
Eminence Front
The Kids Are All Right, etc., etc.

Just like Keith Richards, Billy Gibbons and Eric Clapton, Pete's one of those guitarists you can identify within three notes--usually less!

...as far as the comment about him "being more associated with Teles" (actually a Schecter Tele-esque guitar) or SGs or Rickys...the man played whatever is getting the sound he wants for that album/song/show/era. Clapton also has played other guitars (early on, an Esquire, Les Pauls, SGs) and nobody denies his right to a signature model.

Interestingly, the last few years he's been playing those Clapton Strats with the piezo bridge...because he can get ALL of the sounds of those previously mentioned guitars!

..and finally, as far as influence, where would CSI be without Townsend? :P
