Thanks all for your input! I agree that variety is good and it sounds like the differences are surmountable. I like thick necks so I'm going to go for a '57 Reissue Gold Top.

I agree with Chet and believe everyone should have one of each, brand aside. Whether you have all single coil or all humbucking guitars you should add one of the other so you can cover all bases.

To turn it around slightly, a Strat and a 335 will get you just about anywhere.

Hmm... I've always thought having a LP would be nice but man oh man, they're expensive. I've got a strat and while another one always seems like a good idea I like my Gibson a lot for lead work.

One option for a really cool Gibson would be the L6-S. (I've got a '74 and love it!) You can find a pretty nice one for about $1000 and with the Bill Lawrence pups and 6-way knob, you can get tones ranging from LP to Tele-esque. Not a "real" LP by any means but a sweet, and still affordable vintage guitar with dual humbuckers.

That is seriously Cool!!!

OT, Yeah, get the Paul. If you have Strats, you need to compliment them with an Opposite Number.

I have Three Strats, one Gibson Nighthawk. Went looking for a Les Paul to round out my sound and came across the discontinued Nighthawk. Slanted humbucker in the bridge that's Hotter than an average LP Pickup, and a Minibucker in the neck position. Five position blade switch that allows for quite a range of tones.

Split Bridge, Full Bridge, Split Bridge/Neck, Full Bridge/Neck (like tele mid position, but darker), and Neck.

Not as Pretty or as Revered as the Les Paul, but it sure rounds out the sound of a Strat Player who need some Gibby Chunk.

Did I mention it has a 25.5 inch Scale Length

I'd say go with a Stratocaster. That's what I went for. 8)

Since I was a kid, the two guitars that were icons of rock to me were the Stratocaster and the Les Paul. It's been a lot of years since I watched my older brother's band mates play those guitars! I started playing more than a year ago and purchased my first guitar - an Am. Deluxe Strat - last year. I've been wanting to add a Les Paul so I'll have each of my dream guitars so I've been visiting shops to try them out. What I find disturbing is that the Les Paul is so different to play - the shorter scale length, different cut of the bouts, etc. make the LP sit completely differently when playing. At this point I'd have to say I like playing the Strat better. Maybe it's just a matter of getting used to but I'm rethinking my idea. Maybe I should just get another Strat (an Am. Std. in Olympic White with maple neck) instead. Or, maybe I'll get used to the LP?

Just wondering about other's experiences with these guitars...

I have both for good reason. Two completely different tonal monsters. Everyone should have both if you really want versitle guitar tones.

Hey Chet,
I use and love V picks myself. I have only ever found them at one store in my area. Are you in the bay area? Oh, and I like the guitar as well. 8)

Great choice. You will notice the reissues have much lighter mahogony backs, giving it more balance, and taking a load off your back. Here is mine, it weighs nearly the same as my strat.

Another vote for the Les Paul.

The Les Paul. you already have a Strat, don't confine yourself to a single type. Variety is good. :)

I love Les Pauls, and Strats.

I have a Les Paul, and one day plan to get a Strat.

But I also have a Mustang I love.

It's nice to have variety.

I have had both and I think a big issue is the type of music you play. I play blues,r&b,funk, jazz and rock. I found for rock the LP was the best instrument for me. However for everything else it fell to the Strat. On top of that it was to heavy to play standing up for hours comfortably. Strats just work best for me.

It's nice to have a mahogany guitar with humbuckers to complement a strat. I though about getting another Les Paul (have had 'em before), but decided I'd like both of my guitars to have a whammy. Check out the Carvin CS4. Mahogany with a maple top, much better upper fret access than a Paul, with a 25" scale. And you can order it with a stop bar or a Wilkinson whammy.
