Here are some pics. I'm mainly interested in knowing what kind of pickups I have. I have a terrible problem with static/buzzing on the bridge pickup (which varies in severity as I turn and tilt the guitar, and goes away if I move the switch to the second position), and also how to set the pickup height.

I do not know what kind of pickups were used on your guitar. Sounds like you may have a loose wire or faulty 5 position selector switch. Have you taken it to a guitar tech to see what their opinion is on the problem?

Setting the pick-up height is easy. The little scews next to the pickups will move them up and down. The top screw adjusts the bass side and the lower screw adjusts the treble side of the pickups.

-If- you bought the guitar new and it's an American Standard then it likely has American single coils in it (as apposed to Tex, Tex-Mex, Cobalts, etc). If it was bought used...could be anything if someone before you switched them out.

On the noise issue, it's hard to say for sure without hearing the guitar itself or knowing more about the situation but it almost sounds like normal single coil behavior to me. I'm not trying to be insulting here...I simply don't know your level of expertise with single coil pickups but they do tend to "buzz" or hum in the 1, 3 and 5 positions...this is normal (the middle pickup is typically reverse wound so it "cancels" the noise in the 2 and 4 positions). Also things like florescent lights, computer monitors or even a poorly grounded amp will accentuate this problem...sometimes quite severely. Again it's hard to know exactly what's going on without more information and/or hearing it myself but from what you've described it just sounds like typical single coil pickups to me.

You should be able to find how to set your pickups with a basic internet search...essentially it's a bit of a balance. The closer you have the pickups to the strings the more "power" you will get out of them but this will also tend to kill your sustain as well...the pull from the magnets will tend to dampen your strings if you get them too close. Personally I set mine by ear...I try to find that spot where they sound good but don't overly effect the sustain. As this tends to vary from pickup to pickup based on the strength of the magnets, there's no real one single formula but again you should be able to find lots of info with a basic Google search.

Just a quick $.02 worth...I hope it helps,
Jim
