Greetings All,

I've played a Les Paul-style guitar for years and really, really like it. But, I tried my first strat about a year ago and I immediately fell in LOVE with it, save for one thing: the volume knob being so close to the strings. I know it's great for volume swells, just using your pinky, but I can't get used to it there and I'd rather do without the handy swells! I find it nearly impossible to do any expressive muting with that thing there and can't relax my strumming hand.

My thought is to move the volume knob. I figure I could just put it somewhere else under there that's not so obtrusive. Has anyone tried this? Is there room? Any other suggestions?

Thanks!
Smag ;-)

You could move it no prob (Just drill a hole for it closer to the tone knobs and you're done! The only problem then is the big hole in your pickguard from where the knob used to be.
(To move a knob all you have to do is get the actual plastic knob off and just loosen a bolt).

Thanks Sandwich, I'll give it a look. I don't like the idea of the old hole being left there, but I'll gladly take it if it allows me to move that knob!

Anyone else have/had this issues? Have you just adjusted your playing? How do you lay your palm flat near the bridge for palm muting with the knob there in standard position?

You could re-wire it so the volume knob is on the bottom and the tone knob is moved to the top. OR Re-wire it so you have 1 volume and 1 tone with the top knob being a dummy.

Thanks CAFeathers.

That would work fine for me, one volume, one tone, with the hole nearest the strings being empty (I want to move that knob out of the way completely). Are there diagrams out there to accomplish that?

Yeah, I had the same problems, struggled with it for a while, y'know turning the volume off accidentally whilst I was playing, so I removed the bottom tone control completely, moved the other two pots down and bought a new scratch plate drilled for the remaining two controls.

Whoa, CSM, that's exactly what I'm looking for! Did you do the electronic work yourself? I've looked at the diagrams and am a little intimidated. :-) But knowing that it's been done, and with your photo (thank you!), I know that I can have it done at the local guitar shop if that's what it takes...

Thanks again! :-)

Glad to be of help. I did all the work myself whilst I was changing the pups to a Bare Knuckle Slow-hand matched set.
It's not difficult if you're used to soldering etc. but if you have any qualms about it I'd get a tech to do it. The pickguard I ordered specially from wdmusic.co.uk which they had to order from the USA.

I used to have problems hitting mine and turning it down by mistake, (turning down is always a mistake  )
I did away with the tone knobs completely, I just never really used them.
