I want to find out if my new Strat finish is nitro or poly. There is some confusion as to which finish is on this particular model. I want to remove the pickguard and put a little acetone on part of the body that is covered by the pickguard. I was advised to not do that because if I remove the pickguard myself(which seems like a fairly simple procedure) it will void my warranty. Only a Fender Authorized Repair place should do that I was told. Is that true? Oh my!!!

I've never heard of that. Fender designed these guitars with the intention of swapping parts. They won't cover parts you replace. How are they ever going to tell you removed the pickguard.

What model do you have, this will be a simple answer. All spec sheets state finish.

Not as simple as you think. Sometimes spec sheets are wrong. At least this time.
This is regarding this thread. I have one of these.
Limited Run - 59 of the '59s
On Page four of this thread is the spec sheet. It sounds like the finish is poly but I want to check my finish just for the heck of it.

If you want to test if it's nitro or poly use your eyeballs, you can tell if it poly or nitro by looking at it. They are totally different finishes.

You can take the pickguard off as no one is ever going to know. Now if you were going to attempt to touch any wiring or the like and it went wrong you might have a problem but to test a tiny piece of wood just do it,

If you open the guitar improperly, the dilithium crystals could fall out. Only an fully trained warp-core technician should open a Fender guitar.

As stated under number 10 of the Limitations and exclusion to the Fender Electric Instrument Limited Lifetime Warranty:

"Instruments that have been serviced by unauthorized persons (any person other than a Fender Certified Technician at an Authorized Fender Service Center)."

But I'd be damned if I ever bought a guitar and someone tells me I cant remove the pickguard.

This brings up the question, what does Fender define as "serviced"? I think that means any sort of alteration/repair (involving replacement of parts, rewiring, etc.). Removing and then replacing the stock pickguard wouldn't count.

That's why you can agrue the warrenty until they cave in. But honestly, how often can anyone go to fender with a warrenty issue? You can't! They can backfire everything on you and claim it all as normal wear and tear....

The fine print of all warranty is always like "unless the company changes its mind"

Wouldn't removing the trem spring cover on the back allow to test the finish? That might be simpler than removing the pickguard. At least fewer screws!

That is exactly what I did(removed the trem cover) and found out my finish is indeed poly. The acetone just evaporated. I figured it was poly but I had to check anyway.
