hi there, i've recently bought a strat (MIA) and the advice (from this forum) I got was don't rush into buying the first one you find and you should also try out the different guitars at your local store...even if your not going to buy them there..but its amazing how different each guitar is and you can tell straight away if a guitar suits you or not (I tried this, it worked and i'm only a beginner and could see the difference in guitars).

Be patient keep searching and you'll find the right guitar for you at the price you can afford. It worked for me! as I got a really nice used MIA for the price I was going to pay for a used MIM.

Good luck.

My advice for any one buying a guitar. Play as many as you can in the price range you can afford. Play all makes and models. The right one will be evident. If you want a new guitar look into the Squier Standard, Vintage Modified, or Classic Vibe. You may be able to find a used MIM Fender Standard, but not in any music shops. Buyer beware on used or 2nd hand equipment. There are deals out there, but you need to know what you are looking for.

If your looking for a good strat under $300. I'd take a good look at the Squire Deluxe Strat. You might find a mim for that price but you'd be buying something sight unseen with no returns. Read the fine print returns are usually only if it was not what was described and most are all sales final. Guitar Center or Musician Friend offer up to a 45 day satisfaction Guarantee. :D
If your research said Squire's are not a good guitar it was WRONG

hey all, i am mainly new to this whole world.....bought a washburn accoustic a little over a year ago for my 30th bday and have been playing since.....i seem to have a pretty good handle on this accoustic thing but i want to buy an electric. i have been checking into fender strats but with the economy the way it is, i just don't have the cash for one......until recently i was checking out ebay,(I don't really like the thought of buying a guitar off of ebay) and i found a fender strat, which is refurbished......dealer claims if they find any minor chips or scratches while they are making them they stamp them used and sell them as 2nds. asking a pretty good price significantly lower than any other one i have seen. he is also offering free shipping and a 30 day warranty no questions asked.......I'm not looking to be a guitar collector cause quite frankly i can't afford to be, i just want something that is gonna sound awesome and is reliable. so i am not worried about resale value and what not. so what do you think? good idea or not?

RULE OF THUMB>>> If its too good to be true, probably is.

You can buy a really decent MIM Strat for $250, MIA strat for $600.

Remember you'll need an amp, cables, pedals, etc....$$$$

Squires are sneered upon, but they are truely great guitars. A few electronic upgrades and you'll be hanging with any other strat out there.

No problem, we're all Fender Strat fans, but above all we are just students in the art of guitar...

and we don't like to see people get ripped off ...

as for these guitars stamped "USED" or "2ND" ... I don't know who's stamping them, but I'm pretty sure that the Fender company doesn't.

It's probably a vendor selling gray market items using some sort of loophole that allows selling used guitars ...

Dunno mate these idiots put some real whoppers in their adverts to try and scam people. Their relying on you not researching the buy and give an overload of made up information that we call lies.
I cant for one second see fender ever selling 2nd's. Its just too easy for them to put the thing right or put it in the bin. They just dont need the agro releasing a load of substandards would cause.

As for squire guitars, I think their tremendous instruments. I went from playing this

To this

For an encore, kindly lent by the support band as I'd packed up my guitar. 15 seconds into the song I wouldnt have known much difference, let alone anyone else. Great usable instruments that can perform in any situation when their looked after. Ok I did finger trip on the solo, I put it down to unfamiliarity with the guitar.

The only time I every see 2nd is coming from Gibson. Most likely its a factory restock from a guitar that was sent back with problems... So it should be cheaper because Fender won't warrenty it nor do you have any idea why it was sent back. That's a huge buyer beware situation!

Don't discount a local music shop if you have access to one.

When I first started playing/buying guitars a few years back I assumed all the best deals were to be had on the internet but that hasn't been the case at all.

We have a really good local music shop chain by us. There's one by the office and another 10 miles from home. Their prices are competitive with if not better than the major e-retailers and their customer service is second to none. They carry new as well as used equipment.

Even if you ultimately get something on line it wouldn't hurt to hit up the local music shop and get a feel for some of the things you're seeing in the digital world.

Fender does not do seconds (they turn the dinged ones into "Road Worn" and "Relic" models)

I knew there was a reason why I don't like road worn or relic guitars!
