My 79 Strat is a 1980 !!!

Serial numb on peg head is S9XXXX

But on potentometers I read 1378020

I know that 137 is CTS company and 80 is the year and 20 is the week

Check your pots, its the real year of your guitar

I wouldnt date any fender guitar by anything except the body and neck dates.

Can you imagine how many pots and switches Fender have knocking about at any one time. Particularly the high output days were talking about here. It took em a buy out to catch up on the logo's and serial no's. Never mind a unseen component like the pots.

Body and neck dating is the best, but sometimes is faster to look at the pots (telecaster). And it confirm year.

But if pots are '80 the body and neck could not be 79 ! Or the pots are not originals !

That's right ... use the body dates and neck dates. Fender stockpiles the other parts. Especially in the 1979-1984 time frame when sales dropped.
Those S9 serial number decals lasted a long time. The E4 serial numbers did too (they show up on 1988s).

As for pots, I have seen (and owned) quite a few that were dated 12th week of 1971 ... so they must have bought a boatload of those. It happened in the mid '60s too.

And when your paint job/plastic color combination wasn't introduced until 1981, your guitar can't be a 1979.

String trees, right? Well, they started using two in 1971 (according to the sources: http://home.provide.net/~cfh/fender.html ). My 1971 only has one, but it's neck date is JAN 71, so it's early in the year before the change. My mid-70s have two.

Fender is about exceptions, so it's possible that a 1973 left the factory with just one, or someone could have removed one (and plugged the hole). Or it's not really a 1973. Lots of guitars' "known ages" are wrong.

If you (or the original poster) really want to get the details about your guitar's age, you will have to take it apart. There are date codes on the various parts and pieces .... if you don't know how to interpret the codes, post them here and someone will decipher them for you.

Where should I be looking for these date codes??

Inside the body route cavities, stamped on the heel of the neck, on the bottom of the pickups . . .

On my Strat in the body cavity I read : 11 17 80

So it's a 1980 Strat like pots said

Their records go back that far? 30 years? 40 years? 50 years?

very true! Fenders are interchangable. Sometimes that's a bad thing...
