I want to say that the black strat has an assortment of pickups in it... the best resource would probably be that book about his guitar, but not having read it, I'm not sure how specific the info is on wiring, pickups, or other mods.

Callaham makes a Gilmour sized trem arm... you could probably check out that site to figure the length and cut it yourself pretty easily.

-1 ply black pickguard
-single string tree
-white knobs and covers
-no back cover
-3 spring floating trem (6 point vintage)
-the nut is probably bone i dont recall
-his pickups are 2 vintage 70s strat pickups, and his bridge is a seymour duncan ssl-1 custom wound or something. They dont sell it now I think, the closest is the ssl-5 http://www.seymourduncan.com/products/e ... _staggere/

I think his neck is usually a 57 reissue or something similar, but he changed it a lot. I wouldn't be surprised if he has a 57 reissue on it right now.

Oh also the extra switch for 7 way combo.

I love David Gilmour's guitar playing, both in Pink Floyd and non Pink Floyd contexts. In fact, it's the main reason my first real electric guitar was a strat.

I currently have an American Standard Stratocaster, maple fingerboard with a black body. If I wanted to convert this guitar into a David Gilmour-esque strat, what would I change? (within reason, of course)

Obviously, the 3-ply white pickguard would need to be changed to black. The maple neck/fingerboard and black body are fine. I'd have to shorten the tremolo arm.

What kind of pickups would I add? would I have to change wiring or anything in the body cavity?

I'm not 100% serious about doing this (I'll probably just change the pickguard and get a short tremolo arm.... :)

But, I thought this might make and interesting discussion...

PS - I've often heard that going for "black strat" specs is not necessarily the only route as Gilmour has played many different strats and pickup configurations over the years...

I used a 2010 American Standard Black . The parts came from Overdrive Custom Guitar Works. He has a lot of answers for your questions.

Someday I wish to make a completely white strat but still use Gilmour-esque electronics... I'll call it the anti-black strat

The Custom Shop website will give you the components in the Gilmour Signature Guitar. Then there's the wiring to include the mini-toggle circuit.
There are afte-market people who are offering all of this in a kit. there was a link posted in a thread of similar discussion recently.
