I have a 2008 American Standard Strat with standard pickups. I am using D'Addario Chromes ECG25 strings. They are flat wound 12-16-24w-32-42-52 with a warm mellow tone. I mostly strum, but I do a little finger style, flat picking, and do a few very basic lead patterns (very little bending).

I want to set my pickup height to get better string separation when strumming chords, and get less boomy-ness/ muddy-ness on the low strings.

Do I move the pickups further from the strings to do this? Or closer?

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Sounds like you would want to move the pickups away from the strings a tiny bit. I would do it one half screw turn at a time on each pickup screw and check with your amp. Pickups closer to the strings increase volume, moving pickups away from the strings increase sustain. Hope this helps!

Yes, You want your pickups farther away from your strings.

I use Flatwound 9's and 10's on my Strats and have the pickups set almost even with the pickguard.
